A heat shield, causing a ticking noise that varies with road speed and causes a matching vibration in the gear shift - sounds quite unlikely to me...
Why?
It happened to me on a Honda insight
Drove me bananas
Got it up on the ramp and my mechanic was as confused as I felt.
He heard it whilst driving ( automatic)
And whilst ticking over but only intermittent.
Was only a fluke that he found where it was actually coming from,as the heat shield was to all intents and purposes held on properly,
Bir out of curiosity he loosened it ,
Tightened it up again and bingo noise gone.

When I first heard it I thought I'd ran over something and it got caught in the undercarriage etc,or that I'd something hanging down.
Took a week to find the bloody fault 🫣
Now I'm not a mechanic by any means and obviously thought the worst and get a little foolish in the end but my imagination was stretching as the noise seemed to be getting worse,
And it went away for a while and came back,I thought it was just while on rougher roads or going over ramps etc but no.
Just glad it wasn't the hear box gone

Vibration didn't happen to my car is the only difference
I've been in the business of "diagnosing faults" with different types of equipment for about five decades, along the way I've learned that the vast majority of the time the folks who say "I had the exact same problem" didn't, and yes, I recognize that you didn't use those words, you only implied them.

Heat shields vibrate, or rather, resonate, there's a very slight difference between the two, but essentially the vibration of the engine, which varies with RPM, excites the heat shield, and causes it to vibrate at it's resonant frequency, which is usually a multiple of the frequency the engine is vibrating at.

Heat shield vibrations will VERY RARELY vary with the ROAD SPEED, it may however appear & disappear at specific engine rpms, and it would be quite unusual for you to feel it in the gear shift, which you say was the difference in your case.

Loosening the heatshield & re-tightening it would be enough to change the frequency at which it resonates, as would giving it a firm tap with a ball peen hammer (just hard enough to put a slight dent) - the last vibrating heatshield I had was because of a broken weld, which is still broken, I stuck a screwdriver in the gap and tweaked it slightly, just enough for a slight bend, just enough to change the resonant frequency, it took me less than 15 minutes to find, and that was because I recognized what I was hearing whilst I was still behind the wheel.

Drove me nuts
But so relieved to find it wasn't anything serious

Way back, my 1978 Ford Falcon XC had a horrible ticking noise.
Drove me nuts. It was a light sound (not CLUNK, CLUNK, CLUNK). But driving along and there it was all the time...tick, tick, tickety, tick, ticccckkkkyyyyticktick.
Seemed to be in the dash somewhere. Maybe a loose fit of the plastic parts I thought.
Tried wedging bits of paper under and into things to add pressure that might stop the noise.
Finally found the little sod.
The XC has a rear view mirror that has it's base stuck onto the top (inside of course) of the windscreen glass.
The mirror stalk then sits down on that base and a wee grub screw is tightened to hold everything together.
That tiny wee grub screw was a tad loose.
All that noise from just a slightly loose screw.
Years later on a motoring forum another XC owner was complaining about a 'tick' in his dash area that he couldn't find.
I told him of my story, and next day he's back on the forum full of thanks...his mirror screw was also just a tad loose.
So yeah, a very small 'something' can make a lot of noise (not including children!).

Hey it's mad the way small annoying things seem to get bigger 😀
What u said about cardboard etc rings a bell,
I'd same prob ,bit noise wouldn't go away - my kid found it straight away,
Wasn't in the glove compartment as I had guessed, but a little clip on the sun visor I had for holding sun glasses 🤓
Was rattling away and I never copped it🫣🫣

Ah...Ireland. The land of my fathers.
Yes, truly...my Paternal Great Grandad came from Ireland.
My brother and I remember Cullybackey being mentioned, and Ballymena.
I do enjoy a nice Irish Whiskey too. Currently sipping through a Redbreast.
I will get to Ireland one day. Had a trip planned years ago but Covid stopped that.

Since they fitted the magic oil the noise has definitely been more intermittent and quieter when it does happen. It seems to happen more when the engine is hot.

Im putting this down to the oil they used being more viscous and the viscosity dropping when the oil gets hot. This leads me to believe that it is likely coming from the gearbox. Maybe they spotted the obvious damage, replaced the parts but missed something minor thats causing the noise I originally reported.

Loose bearing cage or bad bearing maybe? Could even be a shaft alignment issue. Either way, its going to be interesting finding out where its coming from.

You should visit
On an Aussie forum a member mentioned visiting Ireland years ago.
He went into a pub and asked for a Jamesons.
Reckons he was just about kicked out.
Apparently he ordered the 'wrong' whiskey.
Had to be Bushmills for that part of Ireland.
I will have to learn about these things before I venture there!
But...I will indeed visit. Love to see the sights my ancestors saw.
