Ticking Noise

7215 Views 82 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Garrydhu
Hi all,

My one year old,13,000 mile Ignis developed a noise this morning. It sounds similar to a playing card on a bicycle spoke, that kind of noise.

It only happens when my foot is off the accelerator,engaging/disengaging the clutch doesn't make a difference and it still happens if I shift into neutral. It doesnt happen when the engine is idling.
When the noise happens I can feel a slight matching vibration through the gear stick.

The frequency of the noise increases with road speed.

Ive checked under the bonnet and had a quick look under the car and nothing seems amis there but it definitely sounds/feels physical rather than mechanical although its odd that it goes away when I press the accelerator.

The dealer cant take a look at it until the 20th so I would like to figure it out myself if I can.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Check the serpentine belt for shredding..
Yes I'd similar ref a swift a few years ago
Also on a Honda insight
Heat shield was causing it
Oh FFS just changed from a Honda insight,no issues whatsoever,
I didn't even pick up my 2016 hybrid yet( tomorrow)
And I'm getting worried with the list of faults being reported here
( I'm a worrier sorry)
Please don't worry. Forums like this are for neurotics. Welcome to the club.
😀😀 thanks 👍
We're not neurotic.......psychotic maybe :ROFLMAO:
Ohhh om in good company so 💪
Surprise surprise the magic oil didnt cure the noise and it came back with a vengeance today. Im going to book it in with a different dealer this time, hopefully they dont try to fob me off with more nonsense.
Burn it, witchcraft
I'd be happier now refilling the gearbox with the specified oil.
Hope u get sorted, say it's down to the ppl you brought it to rather than a dodgy car,
My last 6 cars have been japanese, mostly imports and honesty can't fault them,
As long as service is done ( on time and personally I always change oils early)
I'd keep all paper work,jobs done,time,etc etc,
Get receipts for everything.
If it was me and my car was under warranty I'd change main dealer ASAP
You'd need to be v unlucky to get a lemon 🍋
Persevere but be patient also,
And fairy, most mechanics fiba decent job,
Problem with some main dealers is that work carries out under warranty is pushed back as long as possible
That's my take on it.
PS I only use mechanics with decent reviews,
Yes I love on a small country and it's easier to check up on persons past work etc etc
But with due diligence you'll find a reputable one
Save u a lot over time,as you'll build up a relationship with same.

A heat shield, causing a ticking noise that varies with road speed and causes a matching vibration in the gear shift - sounds quite unlikely to me...
Why?
It happened to me on a Honda insight
Drove me bananas
Got it up on the ramp and my mechanic was as confused as I felt.
He heard it whilst driving ( automatic)
And whilst ticking over but only intermittent.
Was only a fluke that he found where it was actually coming from,as the heat shield was to all intents and purposes held on properly,
Bir out of curiosity he loosened it ,
Tightened it up again and bingo noise gone.

When I first heard it I thought I'd ran over something and it got caught in the undercarriage etc,or that I'd something hanging down.
Took a week to find the bloody fault 🫣
Now I'm not a mechanic by any means and obviously thought the worst and get a little foolish in the end but my imagination was stretching as the noise seemed to be getting worse,
And it went away for a while and came back,I thought it was just while on rougher roads or going over ramps etc but no.
Just glad it wasn't the hear box gone

Vibration didn't happen to my car is the only difference
I've been in the business of "diagnosing faults" with different types of equipment for about five decades, along the way I've learned that the vast majority of the time the folks who say "I had the exact same problem" didn't, and yes, I recognize that you didn't use those words, you only implied them.

Heat shields vibrate, or rather, resonate, there's a very slight difference between the two, but essentially the vibration of the engine, which varies with RPM, excites the heat shield, and causes it to vibrate at it's resonant frequency, which is usually a multiple of the frequency the engine is vibrating at.

Heat shield vibrations will VERY RARELY vary with the ROAD SPEED, it may however appear & disappear at specific engine rpms, and it would be quite unusual for you to feel it in the gear shift, which you say was the difference in your case.

Loosening the heatshield & re-tightening it would be enough to change the frequency at which it resonates, as would giving it a firm tap with a ball peen hammer (just hard enough to put a slight dent) - the last vibrating heatshield I had was because of a broken weld, which is still broken, I stuck a screwdriver in the gap and tweaked it slightly, just enough for a slight bend, just enough to change the resonant frequency, it took me less than 15 minutes to find, and that was because I recognized what I was hearing whilst I was still behind the wheel.
Drove me nuts
But so relieved to find it wasn't anything serious
Hey it's mad the way small annoying things seem to get bigger 😀
What u said about cardboard etc rings a bell,
I'd same prob ,bit noise wouldn't go away - my kid found it straight away,
Wasn't in the glove compartment as I had guessed, but a little clip on the sun visor I had for holding sun glasses 🤓
Was rattling away and I never copped it🫣🫣
I've 14 grandkids so well used to that noise 😀,used travel home once a year in a tiny car ,5 kids n us,
Plus food and clothes etc for 2 weeks,
Back in the early ,9 hour journey
No motorways back then in Ireland

Ah...Ireland. The land of my fathers.
Yes, truly...my Paternal Great Grandad came from Ireland.
My brother and I remember Culleybacky being mentioned, and Ballymena.
I do enjoy a nice Irish Whiskey too. Currently sipping through a Redbreast.
I will get to Ireland one day. Had a trip planned years ago but Covid stopped that.
Nice to know where you come from
Otherwise one doesn't know where ones going
You should visit

On an Aussie forum a member mentioned visiting Ireland years ago.
He went into a pub and asked for a Jamesons.
Reckons he was just about kicked out.
Apparently he ordered the 'wrong' whiskey.
Had to be Bushmills for that part of Ireland.
I will have to learn about these things before I venture there!
But...I will indeed visit. Love to see the sights my ancestors saw.
Paddy or Powers boy,
I don't drink,11 years or more but my particular poison was Beamish stout

In your warm climate does the Ignis perform ok?
Does the MPG suffer ref A/C?
Thanks
Yes, it goes well.
Very peppy, and gets quite 'naughty' at times as it seems to like 140kph to cruise at.
The A/C doesn't seem to affect the mpg. Certainly not enough to make me stop using it.
I would like a wee bit more power in the A/C though. It does get a tad warm here in Summer, and I would enjoy a 'colder' A/C.
But it's OK as is. Not uncomfortable on a hot day. But your ice cream will melt as you drive along.
Thanks for the photos. Much appreciated.
Welcome and thanks
