Alright so i just got a samurai about a week ago and I want it for a daily driver and an off roader on the weekends. I took it out to a rough trail with some buddies and it just didnt have enough power to get over the hard stuff. So im thinking new lowered gears in the transfer case probably. What do you guys think would be the best gears to get if i still want to drive it daily? Or would diff gears be better?

Doing both is best, to spread out the load. But most people only do one....usually tcase. And depending on what size tires you are planning on running, you may not be able to do both and still keep it driveable on the highway (may be geared too low and you will not be able to run highway speeds without running high engine RPMs). IMO, I like to keep the engine RPMs in the 3500-4K range at highway speeds.
Tcase gears lower both the high range and low range ratios, in samurai tcases....it's just the way the tcases are designed and there is no way around it, if you regear the tcase. How much it lowers the high range, depends on what tcase gears you go with. There are charts out there that list how much reduction you get in high, based on the low range ratio.

so i think i know what im gonna do but im not sure yet. for right now while im running 31s i think im going to do a 4.2 or a 4.9 tcase gear swap and then this summer when i get 33s and a lift im going to add some diff gears too. Its just hard figuring out what gear ratios to pick because a lot of people say different things about the different ratios.

Everyone has their preferences on what works best offroad and onroad. The best thing to do is put some various ratios in gear calculators and see what kinda of crawl ratios you have offroad and what kind of RPM numbers you have onroad at various speeds with the different configurations of ratios.

I started with 235s and stock gearing. Ok on road , fair off road. I went to 30's and upgrade to a 4.9 case.. About the same performance as stock on smaller tires. Then I went to 32's and 5.13 axles - great off road, poor on road characteristics. But by now it was a trailer queen. Now I've upgraded to 33's but swapped a 1.6 8v in - haven't really driven it enough yet to give a good review

Depends on your wheeling., and your engine.. Should be fine on road - maybe a little weak if you still have a 1.3. - offroad should be pretty good for general purpose wheeling. You may want a little deeper gears if you crawl much rock

i have 87 stock 1.3 with i i think 6.5.1 transfer gears and i run 33by 12.5 tsl supper swampers i all so have a set of 31"ats for when i no i am not goin to b going any where nasty. as of right now i have stock axel gears but i am currently tearing every thing a part and doing the 1.6 8 valve and while its in the shop i figure i would put new gears in it to help get to hwy speed!!!! and i ran it to your topic. so my ? is what gears do i go with the 4.57 or the 5.38 i want to b abel to do 65 goin up hill. i would b thankfull for any help

I love the gear reduction of the 5.38 but I hate the strength/durability of them. Then pinion is so small that it won't handle hardly any shock load whatsoever. I've rung of 3 sets so far. If your going to 5.38 I would recommend Toyota swaps or hybrid track/kick rear end so you can run the larger rear diff

which suzuki have 5.12' s ?
Vitara or Grand Vitara???
Sorry, some people call them 5.12's - some call them 5.13's... it's a fraction between them.

They are actually found in the Suzuki SideKick or Geo Tracker - Front Differential gears fit the front and rear Samurai diffs.
