I have an sx4 sedan FWD. I can get hold of an AWD thats going to scrap. (roll over, selling off parts).
my question is, would it fit... i can get the trans, shafts diff, transfer etc. but it would have to have same wheel base, frame etc..
anybody know the specs?

I've always thought that would be really cool to do. I think mechaincally it would work, you'd be switching pretty much everything after the engine: Transmission, front axles, transfer case, driveline, rear differential, rear axles, rear knuckles/hubs, etc. Once everything is in, you'll have to worry about the 4WD control module and the associated sensors and actuators. The 4WD module gets information from the BCM, ABS module, ECM, and the intstument cluster itself. If the wiring and programming is going to work out, this would be really cool...I would bet switching the control modules and wiring out of the AWD car would be the easiest way to get that all done; for all the modules would know they're still installed in the SX4 Crossover. Get the WHOLE CAR...that will save you a LOT of trouble making up wiring, etc.
If I had access to a good SX4 Sport and a rolled Crossover, I'd be all over it!

the only thing im not sure about is the wheel base. i think the sedan might be a little longer. that would make for some custom work to the prop shaft..

oh come on, nothing a driveline shop can't handle ;) That's the work they specialize in...I really think that would be the easiest part of the whole swap.
I was thinking: ideally to make it work in a very normal fashion you'd do the stuff I was talking about, but to make it either FWD or 4WD locked would be pretty easy (relatively)...making a switch of some sort. but I'd have to look into that too.
Making the whole swap would be really really sweet. Really sweet. Make it a turbo and you've got yourself a little monster :devil:

why bother the rumor is that the sx4 sedan will be coming with awd soon. They already for 2009 have released the fwd sx4 crossover and they were talking about it coming out for 2010 (sx4 sedan awd).

lol thats the plan..
i had a closer look today, the fuel tank would also need to swapped.
But the frame support where the rear diff brackets would mount up are not there..
i would need to weld up a brace between the frame rails in order to mount the diff.
On the plus side, i measured the wheel base front to back and they're almost identical..
Also the donor car doesn't have the fancy AWD with the lock/auto switch. i thought this was just a simple viscous coupler setup and not need to replace all the control units. i dont see any electrical.. they're both 5spd, ill dig a little deeper..
5 large for the RRM turbo is a little steep right now.. might have to wait a bit.

Pretty sure they all had the electronic coupling and no actual center diff, so you would need the transmission control unit - assuming it has one and it's not built into the ecu. Might need an ecu as well...

The driveshaft to the rear differential is always turning under power, all the time. The only engagement for the rear axles happens in the front section of the rear differential assembly. It uses a solenoid to operate a roller clutch in some very special fluid. The transfer unit in the rear is a sealed unit...you cannot access the fluid, nor is it available for replacement. The transfer case in the front is simply to provide something for the driveshaft to come out of.

Exactly, no true center diff or actual transfer case.

Good question, for BEST answer, go to road race motorsports. They have
the most experience in turbo-ing SX4s.

Launching is probably regarded by RRM as unnecessary abuse of the drive train and they may NOT know much. At least 1 owner of a standard AWD has broken the right angle transfer drive at the front of the drive shaft while "launching".
