The cam belt interval is 90k miles or 5 years so its time for a cambelt change.

Suzuki have quoted £950 as its 8.3 hours work which involves taking the engine out. Not sure if this includes the water pump which is a must.

Does anyone know why the engine has to be removed?

Local garage is going to do the job for approx. £600 but will try to do it without the engine removal first.

Well....sorry but....gas engines we have in Canada and USA and other countries too (J20A and J20B) have a chain.....which lasts much more than 90k miles....in fact, generally, the life of the car. SO...if what you describe is the case with the diesel.....overall, it is more expensive than the gas engine. OK..there are some idler and tensioner problems reported...but does it cost as much to fix it?
What is the origin of the diesel engine ?

It's a fiat multijet II (jtd) engine I believe, same in the Fiat Sedici

2.0 litre DDiS diesel engine (16 valve, 135 PS (99 kW; 133 hp) with 320 N⋅m (240 lb⋅ft) torque)

6 speed gearbox.

Yes cam chains are good, my car has one, this is my Dads car. :D:(
