ok i went against the engine swap had my head done and now i have an over heat... lets start from the begining at first would overheat and boil over i have put a used thermostat in and now its getting hot but don`t take not as quick as it did at first i`m thinking water pump but after the head i`m starting a money pit need some help before i keep sinking money as i`m sure you all know watter pump is a bit of a job and i should have done it with the head give me some my ideas thanks vinnie 64

Start from the beginning.

What model, year, and engine?

What caused you to replace the head initially?

Have you checked the fans and fan clutch for proper operation and do you have the fan SHROUD installed (if so designed)?

the car is an 2005 2.0 Forenza the head gasket was bad and leaking compression into the cooling system after the change i ran it at idle seemed to be fine so i drove it . once it got to operating temp it imeaditly went to peg the gauge fan shroud is in place it would boil over and push its fluid out the cap .went to a pick-a-part and found a used thermostat installed it and now it dosent get hot imeaditlybut constantly builds until it overheats . the engine fans only run with the engine running which i find odd but they do run up to speed. have new thermostat in hand and planning to install a new water pump gettin alot of cash in what was suppose to be a simple head job

A new thermostat for sure, and the correct gasket to go with it.

Make sure that you "burp" all of the air out of the coolant charge after that initial run.

IF you still have issue after all that...you need to check for combustion gases in the coolant system. You may not have fixed your original leak problem, in other words (cracked block or head, or an improper head installation, or the head is warped and not checked / machined to spec).

please explain how to burp the system plus im afraid i may have low coolant flow if i take the return hose off i need to accelerate the engine to get a strong coolant flow

Just make sure that you top off the radiator once the thermostat opens (use caution), have the heater turned on and after your first heat and cool down cycle, check the rad and recovery tank for proper levels. That should be enough.

I'm not sure what you mean there. :huh: Are you talking heater or rad hoses? And how are you determining flow? (keep in mind that the thermostat would have to be open to get "flow").

the hose i have taken off is the small return hose to the coolant tank

THAT hose will only render a relatively small transfer of coolant to and from the overflow tank and radiator as the engine heats and then cools back down, thus maintaining the radiator topped off at all times. If the hose is intact (not leaking) and you have a properly functioning radiator cap, that portion of the system is automatic (so to speak).

Excessive coolant pressure from overheating or combustion gases in the coolant system from internal engine problems WILL cause the tank to overfill and / or spew coolant & steam, if that is what you are experiencing.

The Reno/forenza has a closed system. So that's the only fill for the motor. I would get a new thermometer and check all hoses first
