this is a bit of a wierd problem... the car runs fine when its started (by pushing it), however it wont start using the starter motor. it turns then stops, as though the battery is flat. checked it with a multimeter, it says 12.73volts. tried starting it again while watching the engine. same problem, this time i saw smoke wafting up, which to me says its shorting out somewhere. this is where it gets wierd... the smoke was coming from where the throttle cable joins the carburetor... any ideas as to whats going on?

...i didnt think of that. it came undone yesterday, and i gave it a quick, but not a proper one because i was out on a trail. look into that when i get home from work.

well i fixed the wire, its not the problem. cant even push start it now because the throttles jammed fully in. ignoring that, any ideas as to why the car wont start?... batterys good, but il have a professional check it out, and the starter motor was only rebuilt less than a month ago...

EDIT: had a look to see where the throttle cables jamming. its sticking on the inside of the body, just behind the pedal. theres also black char marks there, im guessing somethings making it short out there...

Yeah! :huh: Like mentioned earlier, you didn't have a proper ground path between the battery and starter, so it took the next possible path, the throttle cable. Now you need to replace IT and reacquire a proper ground connection to the engine / starter.

Check your positive leads while you are at it and hope for the best. You may have additional components (starter) fried at this point. :(

grounds...

The primary ground wire from the battery goes to a big bolt located on the side of the engine block just forward of the starter motor.

That connector is probably loose or the cable is corroded.

If it is not making a good connection, the starter circuit will find other sources of ground - like the throttle cable or any other conductive path between the body and the engine.

yea i now need to replace the throttle cable :( no idea how, can anyone point me in the direction for a guide on how to do it?...

ive finally had a chance to take a thorough look. turns out it is just a wire thats come undone. im assuming all sierras/samurais are the same in this: 2 wires off the negative terminal. short one to the closest body panel, and a main one that leads off to the engine somewhere... the short one was loose, thats the one i fixed. the main one is actually just dangling in the middle of nowhere. where is that actually supposed to connect to?...

edit: posted this before seeing ack's answer. thats my solution then. thanks heaps to all!... btw, would that have had to be undone to remove the starter motor?

doesn't have to be undone to remove the starter, but someone may have if they thought it was going to be in the way.

The throttle cable is easy to change out. Theres a forked eye on the gas pedal and one on the throttle of the carburettor. The throttle cable has a metal slug on either end that fits in the eye on both the pedal and throttle body. it helps to do fit the ends in their eyeletts before you put the cable adjuster section into the throttle bracket on the carb.

About the throttle cable...
You can download a copy of the Samurai FSM at Ack's FAQ (see signature, below, for the link). Do a search for factory service manual. The '88 FSM pretty much works for them all with assistance from the '90-92 Supplement which covers stuff like TBI and the rare 2wd front axle...

About the engine ground bolt...
No, that bolt (or at least the bolt that MY battery ground connection is attached to) is not part of the starter mount. The one that mine is attached to is just above the break of the oilpan on the side of the block about 2 inches in front of the starter itself. That would make it at right angles to and about six inches in front of the two starter mounting bolts. The only possible reason for removing that ground wire is because it might be in the way when you remove the starter. Perhaps someone removed it and then didn't re-install it tightly and it vibrated out...

Oh, and one more thing - Ack's FAQ is up 99+ percent with no major outages! I have made sure that there are NO bandwith problems that can keep you from the answer to your questions!
