I purchased a Stanley 50 gallon tool chest from Home Depot for $60.

It fits perfectly in the back of a Samurai, and gives a place to lock valuables. Because it is taller than the sides of the Samurai, it actually adds storage area when the top is off. I am able to carry everything we need for a camping trip, between this and stuff carried around and in front of the chest.

It has 4 places for padlocks, a built-in lock, wheels, an extensible handle, and is built pretty tough. I use a cable to lock it to the Sami. I know it would not defeat a determined attempt to open or take it, but it allows us to leave the vehicle unattended without fear of someone just grabbing something as they walk by.

It is not dust or water-tight, though it will prevent things from getting soaked from a quick shower. It was subjected to a misting rain all night on a camping trip and the inside was still dry. I would not expect it to hold up wind-blown rain though, as it has no sealing of any sort, not even a lip for mechanical sealing.

I'm planning to get a bumper with a receiver hitch so I can carry it behind the Sami on a hitch basket and still retain use of the back seat, or be able to carry more stuff when camping. Out of money at the moment though, so I'll make do...

Here is a neat idea for a convertible seat/trunk, but only for the Jeep so far;

They are supposed to be working on other applications though, including the Sami.
