Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew what could be a possible cause (and fix) to this problem. Our 1996 US Geo Tracker has recently started sputtering and idleing like it wants to die (it probably been doing this for about a month and a half). It also smells hot and like it's burning a lot of oil.

A year ago, it had an oil leak that was fixed, and the mechanic put on a new alternator belt (because the oil leak had caused it to deteriorate), but when he put it on, the car was making this terrible squeal, which he said was caused by his employee not tightening it enough. Sometime after that, the squealing came back at full force. Then one night while driving, the car started acting funny, where the air wouldn't work, the windsheild wipers wouldn't work and when we parked the car, it wouldn't start. We asked our neighbor to give us a jump, which he did. He took a look at the car and noticed that the alternator belt was very loose, so he tightened it. After that, it worked like normal again (and never had any problems or squealing) until about to two months later, when it started sputtering when it is idleing.
