i recently bought a 1987 suzuki samurai and it is pretty much completely stock and i am considering putting a 4.5 inch spoa on it are there any disadvantages to this and what lift would be the best that isnt to expensive

Don't choose a SPOA if you are going for 'least expensive'.
Taller shackles are less expensive and will net you 2" of lift before getting dangerous with 'monster shackles'.

4.5"of lift will cost you for perches, taller shocks, longer brake lines, custom drive shafts (or adapters), a high steer solution and taller tires (so it won't look silly). The only disadvantage is if you cut corners. Oh, and you won't be competing in any SCCA rallies...

Something in the middle would be a spring reversal kit with a dropped pitman arm.

Anytime someone asks about 'less expensive' or 'cheap' I don't even bother talking about YJ conversions...

Taller because it looks cool? Or are you actually going to wheel it?
A SPOA is far from the cheapest conversion (done right).

Well I was looking and found a 3 inch body lift and was wondering if they are any good because they are fairly cheap and i am planning on using the lift to help with four wheeling because i have been scraping on some of the hills when i come over the top and i am also wondering if you need to extend brake lines with these or anything like that thanks

Yes, it is cheap.
Yes, it is easy.
Yes, it will lift the body off of the tires.
But no, a body lift is not a legitemate lift for offroading.
You are probably scraping on the frame when cresting a hill, and a body lift won't fix that. A body lift will only raise the center of gravity and won't give you any additional offroad capability.

There are legitemate reasons for using a body lift.
1. While doing an engine swap, if the motor/tranny doesn't fit under the hood the body lift keeps you from having to cut the hood.
2. ...can't think of any others.

Ok, so I'm not a fan of body lifts. They look stupid (air gap) and they don't add capability.
Go with a real suspension lift and you will be happier on the trail.

well i was looking and im kinda a cheapo and i was wondering if i were to put a 1-2 inch shackle lift then do a add a leaf spring would that help with offroading and look good

Replacing the stock shackles are a great start. The stock units twist like tin foil on the rocks. An 'Add-A-Leaf' kit will give you usable lift, but you will hate the ride. It will feel like a paint shaker over any bumps.

Look for a friend that is lifting an old Jeep CJ. If they are replacing their springs, ask to have the old ones. Most Jeepers just throw away the stock stuff or leave it at the shop that did their lift. You can grab a leaf or two from each pack and add them to your stock packs (same width). Experiment with spring height and you can make it look great while being fully functional. It will take a new (longer) set of U-bolts to put the packs back together. But it will be worth it.

You need 1976 or newer CJ springs. Pre 76 are to narrow.
Never exceed 1" of body lift.
Never exceed 2" shackle lift...
Bad geometry.
You will soon find that being a "cheep" and wheeling don't mix.....Boxcar...

Shackle lift

I have a 88 samurai with 2" add-a-leafs and 2" body lift. I did put longer ( '06 jeep ) shocks on it but no mods to brakelines or steering. I mainly use mine in fairly flat mud ( lake beds ) so I didnt really need much flex or a smooth ride. It does ride stiff . I have around $200 in lift and I run 31-11.5-15 super swampers.
I do rub a little in sharp turns so I am thinking about putting a 1" shackle lift on it . I then may have to deal wth brakeline and steering issues.
I know Im late jumping in but I hope this helps and (anyone) feel free to give me ideas.
