I bought this 1986 samurai from the guy as he thought the rings went bad in it. He put a new motor in it with only 13k miles. Every time i would drive it it would burn oil and put out blue smoke. Especially when i let off the gas pedal and then reapplied it. Recently I went in to advance the timing and noticed the distributor was all the way to one side. I adjusted it and it ran great with no smoke. Should i still worry about rings? I mean is there any way to tell if rings went bad due to the sound of the engine running? It idles perfect at around 800rpm and starts with half turn of the crank.

Have a look at the spark plugs and check the compression.
