I had a FTP = battery went flat/no crank.

I have removed battery & recharged. The car is street parked, so I cannot do battery charging 'cable over the pavement' 😕

Now...... I have an 'idling hunt' 🙄

Does the ECU have to 'relearn' idle, after battery removal... 🤔

It doesn't relearn "idle" per se, but it does to have to relearn fuel trims, and if it's OBDII (which a 1998 isn't) it would also have to go through several drive cycles to clear various monitors.

I bit the bullet and replaced it... Given the 'Beast from the East' due today, and the disconcerting array of cranking rates - subsequent to it being taken out/recharged/refitted - New.Is.Best 👌

Everything is settling down, on the idle at last 👍
However, my dash voltmeter is worrying me... 13.6v - 14.2v shows, bombing along at 3k revs >> slap on lights/full blowers/HRW and it drops straight to 12.2v >> switch them off and back up to original rate 🤔...
GeoForum (U.S.) point to big issues around 'poor grounds', if anything lowers the ability to sense Voltage Drop in the control wire.. then the Alt will not get "give me all you've got, Scotty!" signal = poor load response.
I'm going to work my way through all the grounds and engine earth strap.....

We Will See (.... With better headlights, for one!)

B-Parts [Portugal] have sold me an Alt - with pictures of the car it's from/part number on denso label - £60 delivered, 22nd Dec.
We will see what this does......

As the Alt exits down past the driveshaft, I tied a rope to the swap - to pull it back into engine bay (.... working alone).
Water pump pulley off, to get better access to outer lower Alt bolt.
Obviously disconnected battery earth - 12V+ Alt cable connection is a nut = don't want to toast the spanner 😱

Darkness stopped the job, just belt refit/tighten.... Air cleaner refit.... Battery reconnect >>> Fire Up 😉👍

All done...... Required a 3PK815 belt (new Alt is skinny 🤨)

13.6V / 14.1V @1k "all Acc ON!"

Managed to dodge the 'highly seasonal' downpours, working in the street at my front doorstep.....

Big shout out for B-Parts & TNT.

I used my 6" to align the Alt pulley, finding out which groove was 'spare' on my engine.
