My Sj 413 keeps cutting out instead of idling. It is very strange as sometimes it will idle, but most times it will just die. i have done a little research and some sugestions are that there may be a vacuum leak. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was planing on taking the carb out tomorrow and cleaning it?

if it has a vacuum leak, cleaning the carb probably won't fix it. Check all of your vacuum lines and make sure that they are connected. There are quite a few of them, check them all. Also note the condition of the hose. If the hose is old and cracked it will suck air, if it has a loose seal on the end it will leak. Before you remove any hose to inspect or replace it, mark where it goes. The vacuum line routing diagram is not very intuitive. If you don't have a leak from your vacuum hoses, then you may have a leak around the base of the carburator or the intake manifold at the engine. You can find leaks by spraying carb cleaner around the area and listen for changes in the idle of the engine. If it boggs down when you spray an area, it has a leak there.

other problems that can cause intermittant idle, are a sticky butterfly valve, clogged nozzles, sticky float... these are all things that you can pull the carb and rebuild or clean it. I wouldn't advise doing this untill you've checked for vacuum leaks though. Also, don't over tighten the carb nuts, its really easy to over tighten them and crack the base of the carb. If the nuts are snug, and its got a vacuum leak at the base, pull it up and replace the gasket, don't try to over torqe the carb to stop a leak.
