Hay I am looking to get a sammy but am trying to decide what engine I want. The Jetta TD is kinda out of the question because I apparently have the wrong year Zook. One of my ideas would be to swap a 1.6 L sidekick engine into the sammy but am worried of the the difficulty of pulling the engine and wiring and all that good stuff.

Dose anybody know how hard that is and where the computer might be mounted in the sidekick.

The computer is under the dashboard, you want the complete engine with manifolds, sensors, starter motor and all other bits and pieces, 8V is simplest swap, make sure you get the MAP sensor from the bulkhead (follow the vacuum pipes) get all the wiring from the engine bay and under the dash so you can strip it down to just the EFI wiring, make sure you get the relays by the ECU too.
Grab the speedo because you'll want to get the speed sensor from the speedo head.

The sammy I am looking at is I think an 82, apparently thats what the papers say, all tho the sammy has a 5 spd tranny I think, if my reaserch is correct it shuld be a 4.The people said that I would have to swap a tranny, kinda trying top be easy on the wallet, so it seamed like a lots cause.

On another idea do you thing it would be more beneficial to have EFI, because i also considered trying to get a carb on a 1.6 16v,

or if any body has a suggestion of another engine I could go with.

A carbourated engine would be such an easer swap.

So many decisions.

If you are really considering doing the TD, adding a tranny is minor. I've seen stock sammy trannys go for all of $50. What about a VW trans?
You can swap anything into anything. Who ever told you that you can't do a TD is wrong.
The 1.6 is easier, but IMHO it's no contest. Ability to burn free french fry oil, get 40+/- mpg, all the power you could ever need... don't even have to ask twice. VW.
You know there are VW/Sammy specif lists, right?

From your description and the age it sounds like this could be an SJ410 rather than a Sammy, in which case it will have a different (4sp) transmission and also a narrower transmission tunnel. You would need to swap the tranny for a 1.6 also.

yeah, if your looking at swapping a 410 transmission then you're going to have issues fitting any other transmission in there. If it's a samurai transmission and motor already mounted to the 410 then you may have to do some minor fabrication to the engine bay and the transmission tunnel. Where did you find an 83 SJ?

Thinking some more, my SJ410 was an 84, an 82 would be a very early SJ410 with drum brakes. I don't think the transmission and braking would be adequate for either a 1.6 or a TD engine.

Ya i figured it was an SJ 410, all tho it dose have disks in the front I think, also somebody swapped a efi turbo charged 3cyl into it, I think it was from a fire fly, and the turbo is now gone because it over spooled or something like that. The seller said it was just a daily driver, ha. I'm pretty sure this in not a definite idea but the shift stick has a 5 spd knob on it I think.

Another thing, dose any body have an idea on what it is like to get parts for an 82 SJ 410.

And sorry didn't realize there was a section on engine conversions.
