I have a 2004 Vitara v6 with 50,000 miles on it. After running some errands around town a week ago I parked it in my driveway. A little later I tried to start it and nothing happened except "click". I had it towed to my hometown mechanic and he says the engine is seized. All vitals were OK when I turned the engine off - no lights on the dash, no noises, no smells, nada. It was working fine and in the space of an hour or two it seized up sitting in my driveway. How could this happen so quickly? Do I need another opinion?

Engage park brake, block wheels..

Remove all plugs, Put the tranny in N, and turn the engine over by hand, socket on front crank bolt....

Report back.....

Sounds more like a dead battery to me, maybe even a "frozen" or stuck starter.

I really don't see how an engine could "seize" whilst not running, and the chances of it seizing at the exact instant you switched it off aren't really that good, and surely would have been accompanied by sort of sound or smell (engines can seize for different reasons, overheating, lack of lubrication).

Yes - a second opinion is called for - and Philip's suggestion will give you an idea as to if it is in fact seized (it won't turn if it is).

you need to check yourself,I had a mechanic that i thought was honest took my tracker to him for compreesion check he gave me numbers of 80-85-90-80 and said i needed a new engine immediatly . And he had some used engines lined up 3200 installed or a new one for 4500 and he was chompin at the bit. Took it to a mechanic that was suggested by green hornet and he told me i have no issues, drove it another 10000 miles before timing chain started to tic then got engine rebuilt for 2700 installed. 2 weeks ago went to midas to get cats checked they said they were bad 800 bucs later problem not fixed went to my new mechanic he found problem (cam sensor) and i am good to go. listen to that voice in your head if you think it stinks it probably does. i did not listen and it cost me 800 bucs

Aqua and captwoody have some good advice snowbird. I'm not saying the engine could not be "siezed", but like others have said, for it to be running with zero issues, then sieze, is about like being struck by lightning.......always possible, but HIGHLY unlikely. As captwoody pointed out, sometimes things go south even with someone we believe to be on the up and up. Things just don't add up here. Did they collect an oil sample? Or a radiator fluid sample? Did they provide ANY supporting evidence of a siezed engine other than they can't get it to turn over? I would go get the vehicle, pay the current mechanics fee, and find someone else.

My 1st thought was coolant / hydro-lock too.

It's odd that the engine would let go if it (presumably) has oil in it or wasn't overheated. It's possible to have parts break (drop a valve / break a con-rod) but it's rare, in other than racing applications.

My thanks to all who have responded, your honest and sage advice is greatly appreciated. My hometown mechanic is an old friend I have been using for years and I trust him completely. He and all his mechanic friends are completely buffaloed too and think I should take it to a Suzuki dealership somewhere. I'm going to ask the local Chevy dealer if he can work on it first because the nearest Suzuki place is 60 miles away. I will keep you posted on this mechanical mystery.

And you MAY want to consider a good / used replacement engine, verses a full-scale rebuild / repair of yours. It all depends on the severity of the cause / damage. IF you took out major components (or the block is ruined beyond repair) used makes sense.

Only an "open and inspect" can provide you with the knowledge of what path to take.

For used engines, see...
Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market

You can tailor the search by ZIP / distance too. Expect costs to be in the $1000-$1500 range on relatively low (under 100K) engines. Plus whatever the install fee might be if you farm-out the work.

Plug in your location under "User CP" please.

there is also the possibility your friend made a mistake, somthing like forgetting to pull plugs. or starter jammed flywheel I have learned our Suzuki/trackers have a lot of unique procedures for testing that general mechanics are not used to. an example is my mechanic spent probably 10-15 hours trying to find what turned out to be a bad cam sensor.if you check my name on posts you will notice i ask a lot of questions so if i cant fix it at least i can point my mechanic in a direction. with a possible 2000-3000 dollar fix i would double check friends work myself to see if engine will turn over. in my opinion your description does not match a seized engine without oil or coolant issues and a normal shutdown

Latest update and it ain't good.
I had the car towed to a nearby Chevrolet dealer that said they could work on it and they found the same thing, the engine is seized. They have no explanation of why it happened and said they could replace it with a used one for $4500.00. I am going to try and find a mechanic that will tear the engine apart and find out exactly what happened and maybe it can be repaired. Otherwise it will go to the highest bidder on ebay. Anybody got any other ideas?

replace it with a used one for $4500.00
That price is way too high, IMO.

Did you check for a good / used engine per my post above?

$1K for an engine, maybe another $1K for install w/ new hoses, oil, coolant and belts would be more like it.

find a local engine rebuilder they did mine for 2700 installed not the guy who buys the 2700 dollar crate engine and then installs it for 2000 more. out here in california they install used engines for 500-800 all day long and used engines are 800-1200.where are you located? that will help in which direction to point you

It was an attempt to link the search results from the link I gave you earlier.

You can also search for the TRACKER 2.5. Same engine.

Try it by ZIP code for results like...
