I have an '88 samurai with a Webber carb and a manual choke. Everything else is stock. It began missing, running rough, and would backfire thru the carb some. Then all at once it would not fire at all. I had fire to the distributor, but none coming out. It appears the rotor had shorted down to the post it mounts on. I changed the coil, rotor, and distributor cap. The engine started right up, but the missing and backfiring remained.

Could these issues contribute to the rotor failure?

Where do I start diagnosing these problems?

ps. I retimed the ignition and it helped a little, but not much.
