im buying a samurai soon and i just want to know what engine swaps are possible :confused:.

i was thinking of a 22re from a toyota or a small diesel :).

any suggestions would help :).

The toy has been done, but I have heard from folks that have done it that it really didn't add anything more than a simple 1.6 track/Kick swap would do - just alot more work. If you want a diesel, Acme makes a decent kit to drop in a VW 1.9TD.
If you are lucky enough to find a 90+ Samurai that already has EFI, then just swap the 1.6 block into place using the original intake and exhaust with the standard swap kit and be done with it. More power and less hassle.

Anything is possible it depends on how much work you are prepared to do
and if you have the knowledge to do it your self, the vitara engine will fit with a bit of work, also some of the small fords but you wont gain very much
over the original engine, now if you want real power I saw one fitted with a rover v8 but that was a major job

vw is a nice diesel swap in the sammi. check out rocky-road.com. I actually have the rocky-road conversion kit i was going to put in my sammi but i didn't end up doing it. its new in the box, if your interested i'd sell it to you for a good deal.

Give guys at SuzukiLightningConversion.com a call they offer both V6 & V8 engines kits for samurai & tracker/sidekick.

I had a Sam with 4.3L V6 in it an it was so powerful i could easily spin the 33's the guy i got it from had on it an other then needing a 20-30gal fuel cell it was perfect rig for all-terrain use but sadly it was destoried about 2 weeks ago when the rock ledge i was parked taking pics of it on gave out an it dropped 200ft to it's death but good news i now drive a 89 Jeep Wrangler S which fells like a bigger version of Samurai.

One note of warning... I have met very few (read 1) Suzuki Conversions customers that were happy with their vehicle once they received delivery. I personally have helped to fix a vehicle they had just finished - just to make it safe on the trail. The client was VERY unhappy with his purchase.
Bottom line - See their stuff first hand before making a purchasing decision. Make up your own mind, don't just take advice from the 'net (my advice included).

I test drove 1 of Suzuki Lightning Conversion V6 Samurai's down in florida before i bought the 1 for sale by me in upstate new york, i think the guy did the install himself but he could of bought it from Suzuki Lightning Conversion didn't ask.

Check out this link. Rocky-Road Outfitter - Samurai Engine

They sell kits to swap in sidekick/tracker 1.6L (easiest engine swap), Volkswagen standard & turbo diesel engines and they even Chevy 4.3L V6 which makes most sense if you want 4wd tire spinning power but the 1.6L or diesel would be alot better choice.

help with samurai 4.3

hi i am new to this forum thing, but am looking for more info on the 4.3 swap in a samurai.

my plan so far is to use a 4.3 from an s10 with tbi, i found a motor that comes with wiring harness, computer, etc for $200.

i think i am going to use a th350 2wd trans and use the stock divorced t-case. i have heard that with an upgrade to the output shaft the stock transfer cases are really strong, and mine already has lower gears.

for now, i'm going to use the stock samurai axles because i'm only spinning 31" tires but eventually i will probably upgrade to toyota axles.

i am fairly good at welding and fabricating, and am planning on making my own motor mounts, trans crosmember, etc without using the kit because i am on a very tight budget and i have heard bad things about the lightning kits.

any info on the swap would be apprecieated.

Many possibilities, Nissan SR20DET, 5.3 Vortec, EJ25..... Just depends what your going to use the beast for.

So I need to know what your goals are?

Just assuming, I would recomend a 1.6 16 valve. Readily available, easy to swap, good power/reliability.

Sounds like you have the skills & knowledge for the job! It will be alot of work, but worth it once your finished. And yes, your right stock t-case on samurais are great, should hold up to the abuse of the 4.3 no problems!!! Good luck bro!
