I noticed there are two different bench seats for the Samurai. One has a taller back rest, as where the other version has a shorter back rest. From what I saw the short back was in a 85' Jimny hard top, and the tall back version was in a 89 convertible SJ413.

Did the hard top Samurai's have shorter backrests?

I have both sizes. The taller seat was stock in my 88.5 soft top. My 92 has a shorter version that was sitting in the back when I got it, but I know for a fact that the 92 was the first year they didn't offer a rear seat here in the US. Something about safety and not going to the trouble of installing rear shoulder belts.

It was interesting that although the body (tub) did not have the holes for bolting a seat in place, the threaded inserts were still there under the sheetmetal. All you had to do was carefully measure to find here they were supposed to be and carefully drill through the sheetmetal. Everything bolted up, including the rear seatbelts (lapbelts).
