Do the axels need to be pulled in order to remove the 3rd member on a 1987 Samurai?

Thank you

Yes they do - I can't think how you would remove any third member without pulling the axles.

Yes.

Suzuki differentials are what, I believe, they call "floaters". You slide both axle shafts out of the axle housing to disconnect them from the differential sidegears. The axles are held in lace by the retaining plate behind the brakes on the axle ends. Once this is done, you can unbolt and remove the differential.

The other type of differential requires you to remove the back plate on the differential housing, then remove the heavy-duty C-clips that hold the axles in place, then slide the axles out of the differential sidegears so that you can unbolt and remove the differential itself.

As Fordem says, either type, you still have to slide the axle shafts out of the differential sidegears to remove the differential itself.
