In my area the 1.6L engines for the tracker/sidekick are next to impossible to find. I plan on driving my 94 tracker for as long as possible and want to have some idea of my options for an engine swap when my engine gives up the ghost.
I would like to maintain good gas mileage since it is my daily driver and parts availability and ease of doing the swap are also issues I need to take into account.

What would be a motor and manual transmission to keep an eye out for?

there is a guy on here stuffing a ford 302 motor in his kick. since you have a 1.6 you have a lot of options for engine swaps if you want. some of the ones that i have seen that worked well.

Suzuki J motor (1.8, 2.0, 2.3)
the Vortec 4.3 is a good option but its big
VW turbo motors (like the 1.8T)
and my personal favorite the VW TDI motor

Rebuild the 1.6 or go diesel. I have often wondered if a 5 cylinder Mercedes diesel would fit in a tracker...

I would not use lightning conversions...horror stories galore.

The 4.3 actually DOES seem to work well. I am curious as to the mpg with one..no one ever says anything about that.
