I need to rebuild the extra engine in my garage and I am curious on how hard it it to do, and how hard it is to pull the engine and replace with new one. I do not have a cherry picker or anything like that. I am still new to this sammy world.. haha:D


If anyone could help me out? I have the HC Pistons, rings and gaskets (the previous owner was planning a rebuild and then didnt due to illness) what elso do I need? I plan on posting pictures later on tonight

I think you've already been given sterling advice on how to proceed with an engine rebuild - I really don't see why you feel the need to ask again.

You start by cleaning, then disassembling and measuring, and only after the measurements been taken and the condition of parts assessed (based on the measurements) can you decide on a way forward, and start selecting parts - piston & rings, bearings (main, rod & thrust), gaskets & seals, timing belt, tensioner, oil & water pumps, clutch assembly

The condition of the crank journals will dictate if it needs to be machined, and to what dimensions, and that will dictate what bearings are required.

The condition of the bores will dictate if they need to be machined, and to what dimensions, and that will dictate what pistons & rings can be fitted.

The block will also need to be checked to determine if the gasket surface is flat or need to be decked, as well the head - the condition of the valves & guides will need to be assessed, at the very least they will need to be lapped and have new seals fitted, you may require new valves, guides & a valve seat job.

Based on your questions, I'd say you lack the tools & experience to do this on your own - you need to seek assistance, and I don't mean asking questions on the internet - you need someone alongside you to supervise you.

Having said that - these are simple engines, they are not hard to rebuild, they are all aluminum and not that heavy - light enough that one person can lift it, although you would need one on either side and a third to line it up to install it - so, no cherry picker required - a $20 "come along", a timber A frame and some chain is more than adequate.

A rebuild should be an all or nothing approach. Assuming you want to install the engine too, I'd sell off the parts you have & shop for a running 1.6 & invest your resources there. Plan on spending a lot of time & a pile of cash either way. You'll get more for your headache from a swap. If you don't have a lift, you'll have to modify your oil pan & pickup tube. If you're carbed, you can throw a 1.6 8v pretty easily. A 16v is more extensive & expensive but it sure does kick. Any way you go, plan on being a regular at the auto parts store. Plan on spending way more time & money than you plan on spending. But it's very doable if you're tenacious. I spent months sourcing parts. Alotta trips to the junk yard. A lot of buying parts online. Obsessive amounts of research. Just take your time, be meticulous & don't be stingy. If you're set on rebuilding a 1.3, find an automotive machine shop to look at it. They'll be thrilled to start you a tab. Just my 2 cents.

I had the engine rebuilt by a shop out in my neighborhood, runs great! although I have not much power when in 5th gear. But I posted another forum topic on that.

Thank you guys for the advice!
