Hey guys, Im new to this forum and my reno is my first car and i love it! I just ordered a powered sub because im too cheap to buy an amplifier along with a sub. This is my first time installing a sub-woofer on a car and i am wandering how to go about wiring it and all that stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I do all of my own work on the car and would really rather not take it into a shop to get it installed because ive heard powered subs are not that hard to install.

My first suggestion IS going to be "take it to a shop", or at least find someone who is familiar with car audio installations to guide you.

You're going to need to figure out how to connect the particular unit you have chosen (and since none of us have a clue as to what that is, we really can't point you in a given direction) - does it use speaker level or line level inputs? does it have a built-in cross over? does your head unit have a separate sub output?

Once you've figured out the connections, you get to figure out the mounting, and the installation details - stuff like where to run the power feed (don't forget to fuse it), where to run the signal feed (please don't run it alongside the power feed).

If I were to assume you're going to mount this sub in the trunk, you might want to consider some sort of sound insulation, dynamat or what have you, there's nothing more irritating (to my ears) than the hearing the back half of the car next to me at a stop light buzzing & rattling in time to the bass.

No - they're not hard to install - attach a wire here, plug a lead in there, screw it to the floor (watch out for the fuel tank) - but unless you know at least the basics, it'll sound like ....

They are pretty straight forward units to install. The hardest part you'll have is determining how to remove your head unit to access the existing wiring, and the corresponding wiring color codes for which to connect to. Your unit will hopefully lay out the general path to installation for you in it's directions.

I installed this Kenwood unit some time ago under my front seat in the GV and another in the trunk of my Nova. Love em'! :)

If I recall correctly, the stock headunit has two outputs. One for the antennae for the raido and the other is where the OEM harness plugs into.

The antenna connection would be an INPUT, no? :huh:

OP...look for RCA jack connections. Typical male shown here (on either end).



If none, you'll have to splice into the speaker wires (after the head unit harness plug) to acquire the signal you'll need. ;) That is the same wiring that will provide additional needs (12V "switched" power signal for instance). It'll all be in your install manual.

If you are uncomfortable with any of this...get a Pro install.

That's cool. :)

Some head units provide an ANT output for other components, but it's rare. Just didn't want to confuse the OP.

My sentiments exactly!

There's a bit more to installing a sub, powered or not (although powered are easier), than there is to swapping in a new head unit, or swapping out the OEM speakers - both of which are tasks that can be handled by the average home handyman, anyone who's not colorblind and can wield a screwdriver.

Yes - there are powered subs that are cinch to install - the Pioner spare tire subwoofers for example - drop into the spare tire screw it down with the provided bolt, hook the speaker level inputs to the rear deck speakers - the most difficult part is running the power & turn on feeds. These work great in a hatch, in a sedan, not so good.
