Good day to all!

In reply sa request mo YT, I myself doubted it at first kung totoong
PS talaga 'coz I didn't see any oil container where you put the steering
oil commonly seen in L300 vans. Usually a hyd.pump is installed for this
job, but I didn't see any. When I checked under chassis, normal lang
siya na rack & pinion assembly (attached photo).

So I searched the net & found out that some modern cars like Honda
Jazz, Acura NSX, FIAT & Lancia cars (mostly small & lightweight cars)
utilize a "motor" for this feature. Hindi ko nga lang ma locate ang
motor hanggang ngayon. But I checked the fuse box where all the
fuses are kept (under the steer.wheel), there is one slot there labeled
as "PS" (30Amps.). I tried taking the fuse out & started the engine.
My steering wheel is harder to manipulate. After installing back the
fuse, it became easier to control as before.

Actually, the Casa owner told me that they can install additional PS
for P5T. I also heard that you can buy this assembly at P1.5T

I will share some of my notes (basic principles) for those interested in
Power steering.

Power steering

- is a system for reducing the steering effort on cars by using
an external power source to assist in turning the wheels.

Power steering was invented in the 1920s by Francis W. Davis and
George Jessup in Waltham, Massachusetts. Chrysler Corporation
introduced the first commercially available power steering system on
the 1951 Chrysler. Imperial under the name Hydraguide.

Types:

1. Hydraulic systems
2. Electric systems
3. Servotronic
4. Electro-hydraulic systems


1. Hydraulic systems

Most power steering systems work by using a belt driven pump to provide hydraulic pressure to the system. This hydraulic pressure is
generated by a rotary-vane pump which is driven by the vehicle's engine. As the speed of the engine increases, the pressure in the hydraulic fluid also increases, hence a relief valve is incorporated into the system to allow excess pressure to be bled away. While the power steering is not being used, i.e. driving in a straight line, twin hydraulic lines provide equal pressure to both sides of the steering wheel gear.

When torque is applied to the steering wheel, the hydraulic lines provide unequal pressures and hence assist in turning the wheels in the intended direction.


2. Electric systems

Electric Power Steering, such as those found on the Acura NSX, the Saturn VUE V6, and on most FIAT and Lancia cars, uses electric components.

Sensors detect the motion and torque of the steering column and a computer module applies assistive power via an electric motor. This allows varying amounts of assistance to be applied depending on
driving conditions. Most notably on FIAT group cars the amount of assistance can be regulated using a button named "CITY" that switch between two different assist curves (boost curve), while on Volkswagen/Audi group cars, the amount of assistance is automatically regulated depending on vehicle speed.

In the event of component failure, a mechanical linkage such as a rack and pinion

serves as a back-up in a manner similar to that of hydraulic systems. The software in the computer module enables the flexibility of "tuning" the characteristics of the electric power steering system to suit the preference of the vehicle designers.

The "feel" is often set a bit on the light side so a criticism commonly expressed is a lack of steering "feel".

Electric power steering is limited to smaller vehicles. This is because the 12 volt electrical system is limited to 80 amps of current which, in turn, limits the size of the motor to less than 1 kilowatt. (12.5 volts times 80 amps equals 1000 watts)

Vehicles such as trucks and SUVs require a larger power output. A new 42 volt electrical system standard may enable use of electric power steering on larger vehicles.

Electric systems have a significant advantage in fuel efficiency because there is no hydraulic pump constantly running, whether assistance is required or not, and this is the main reason for their introduction.

with regards to all zuki vans, all technology of power steering is rack-n-pinion type, electrically or motor controlled. try checking it sa engine sa rear bay.

:D greetings. I got a Suzuky Scrum, seatbelt date 97. When I got it repainted I saw the powersteering motor to the right of the steering colum at a 2 oclock position position. Power steering is electrical on Suzuky Vans.

Hey, is your zuki the one with a protruding nose? or the usual flat one?

Flat nose

:D Greetings! Its flat, I got it painted pearl red, I saw a jeepny with a flying pig on its side, and thought, what if I put a plastic pig nose, and a little tail on it, it would be a real flying pig then! :lol:

I recently examined this steering system of my van (also a Suzuki Scrum seatbelt date 1997) because of irritating noise which was believed at first to be just the plastic covers of the steering column/switches. But it's NOT... I even took it out (Steering Column Assembly) the other day and spray wd40 to the inside as the noise came from there... I did not go further such as dismantling as I'm afraid if the trouble become worse. Put it back but the rubbing noise is still there. I'm planning to took it off again to examine furthe. I"m asking if anyone has dismantled to look inside of it??? Is it easy and nothing to worry? Any reply would be of great help. Thank you...

Greetings! WD40 stands for Water Dryer # 40. Developed by US Arm WWII to dry carbs for the amphibious operations. It may free up something, but will wash what ever lube grease may have been left from the parts, and increase the problem. it also promotes rust on unpainted parts such as the steering column. find a spray such as silicone, and try that. The rub is coming from sharp metal contacting something near the steering wheel, had it before long ago. Do not remember precisely what it was.

Good day!!! Thank you newsavedone for the information. Now I know about WD-40. Most of its users were misinformed on that...
BTW, I also called Undo (your mech) last night to refer on that problem, ask him if dismantling would be easy... Very curious and interested to troubleshoot...

Irritating Noise Finaly Solved

I recently examined this steering system of my van (also a Suzuki Scrum seatbelt date 1997) because of irritating noise which was believed at first to be just the plastic covers of the steering column/switches. But it's NOT... I even took it out (Steering Column Assembly) the other day and spray wd40 to the inside as the noise came from there... I did not go further such as dismantling as I'm afraid if the trouble become worse. Put it back but the rubbing noise is still there. I'm planning to took it off again to examine furthe. I"m asking if anyone has dismantled to look inside of it??? Is it easy and nothing to worry? Any reply would be of great help. Thank you...

I have finally solved the rubbing noise on the power steering system of my ride that was heard every time I turned the wheel. They were the two (2) small ball-bearings with Numbers 629 & 608. They are found in the link next to PS motor... Thanks you everyone for the help..

Hi, I'm new to this forum - I have a Scrum as well but I'm just not sure if it is 'power-steering' enabled. Are there shops here in Cebu that you guys can recommend?

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

Good day to all,
im glad that ive found this thread.
Just got my cab from my dealer. it has a power streering mechanism (motor, rack, control box) but its not working. i even remove the motor from the rack to make the steering wheel more easy to steer. i found out that the PS controller (not the ECU)has traced of water. so i guess that this one is the cause of the problem.
maybe you have a copy of the electrical schematic diagram of the electric power steering that might help me fix this one. many thanks to all.

hi Newsavedone.. can i also request for a copy... i recently bought a power steering set for my pick-up truck and need the details of the connections... it would be of much help to have one... Also needed is the wiring dia for the central lock system... i just got a surplus set (suzuki orig with box)... thanks for your help
