I just bought this car a few days ago and it drives great but I'm wondering if it's normal for the gear shifter to have a fair amount of play/movement forwards and backwards, even when it's in gear. It doesn't seem to move around on it's own but it feels kind of loose like I can move it a lot without it coming out of gear. Should I get this looked at or is not a problem?
I haven't driven an Alto since the early 90's, but, it's a little unusual for any gear shift linkage to have noticeable play, so if YOU think it's not right, have it checked...
Over time, the shifter cable/rod can develop a bit of wear in the eyelet end (some had replaceable nylon/plastic bushings, some did not). The older van I owned had quite a bit of excess movement but did function properly so I just used it as-is.
