I've been looking for performance ideas for my 1.3L 4 cyl. It runs great but what can we do. I've heard of replacing the chip but I've also heard that it's soldered in to the board.So it's not really replaceable. I know K&N and header probabilities. What do you think of octane bosters or premium gas. There's gotta be something to make the old 1.3 say vroom on the trail. Hi perf coil I dunno what have you tried and how was the outcome. Thanks for your replies.

Depends on a few things.
what size rubber do you run, gears, anything else after market on it yet?
How much $ do you have?
What type of trails are you running?
(I'm not a fan of K&N. Mine always shrink)

We can help you spend your money, all of it and make a really kick @ss ride, but you have to give us more info.

Rubber, gears, and money

I have 31's with a 3" shackle lift all around. Everything else is stock. I run the four wheeler trails, some sand pits, and abandoned rail beds. No crazy high sand hills. Money is a joke right now, I'm working 3-4 days a week.

carbureted samurai ECU is not chipped.. its not even an ECU, just a carburetor control. Header is the best bang for the buck for engine preformance. Next would be a preformance cam. After that the engine mods start getting spendy.

Now for power mods that aren't engine related, I'd re-gear the T-case before I even touched those engine mods I mentioned. A GRS2 from petroworks would probably be perfect for the type of wheeling that you do and the size tires you're running. It reduces the gears just enough in the high range to roll the 31's comfortably at freeway speeds and low range gives you plenty of power to do average wheeling.

It's all about gearing. Get your gearing down to where it should be _then_ play with the engine.

You are running 31's with just shackles???
The rear may me fine but the front _has_ to rub.
I stuck 31's on mine just to see what it would look like before my lift. Looked really nice with the stuffed look but could only go in a smooth, straight line. ;)

Yeah if the problem is only rolling those larger tires, then the easiest way is to regear your transfer case. You can get a 1.6:1 reduction on high range 2WD with Trail Gear's 6.5:1 transfer case gears. That's 20%, and will give you proper reduction for rolling the 31" tires.
