My SX4 has had a slight roaring noise coming from the back. I thought it might be wheel bearings, but when I jacked up each rear wheel, there was no side to side play. With the car in neutral and the parking brake off, I tried to turn the wheels independently and they were moderately hard to turn. There was a rubbing sound of the kind that you get when the parking brake starts to engage.

The manual says the brake should be engaged at 4-9 clicks. I can get it up to 12, but that's pulling very hard on it. At 2 clicks, it makes the wheels impossible to rotate by hand. Is that normal?

Is there anything that might cause the parking brakes to tighten up on their own?

YOu probably know that "moderately hard to turn" is what comes as normal with the AWD...turning a rear wheel turns the half shaft, the differential, and rubs the rear part of the clutch coupler against the stationary front part.....
Harder than that must be analysed...but the above explanation must be taken into account...
Of course, roaring is a concern...

I'm thinking the roaring is tire noise.

Much of this is second-hand, coming from my wife who has been driving a Chevy Volt. Yes, a Volt is a lot quieter than an SX4 with cheap Taiwanese tires on it.

I did some coasting tests, and when coasting in neutral, it takes 14 seconds to drop from 40 to 30. I'm thinking that sounds pretty reasonable for an AWD car.

I'll keep an eye on it, but I think you're right--it's probably resistance in the AWD.

I'm knocking on wood here, but the only serious problem I've had in 75,000 miles was when a piece of plastic twine wrapped itself around the prop shaft and ate one of the seals. Pretty quick fix.

This is among the best cars I've ever owned.
