Hi - My 2008 SX4 (104,000 miles) check engine light came up the other day, so I took it to Auto Zone to get their free diagnostic check. I wanted to have some idea whether it was safe to keep driving with it on, or if I should get it in for service right away.

The code was P0420, something about the catalytic converter operating below par. I did a little googling and came up with this discussion on a Suzuki form in the UK: View topic - Emission Warning Light. ? Suzuki Forum

If you scroll down a little, someone mentions a service bulletin BE:Q:G:031. Apparently this can just be a software issue and not indicative of a true problem: "There is an engine ecm rewrite which will stop the light coming on. your dealer has the Suzuki SEPS system which will allow this to be carried out in about half an hour."

I asked my Suzuki service place here in the US to just run the update and see if the light stayed off, but they told me they know of no such update.

Is this accurate? Basically I am wary of being taken. (I'm driving a 2008 vehicle because I'm not made of money!) It would be easy for them to say I needed a new catalytic converter, even if I don't. How would I find out if there is some such update available here in the US, and if not, why wouldn't there be?

I would suggest using a LDS and seeing what the ECU is encountering on the S2 O2 sensors...

The first thing I'll say is don't believe everything you read on the internet.

In my experience, Suzuki's bulletins (or TSBs) don't have numbers that look like that - I have several that are applicable to my vehicle, and everyone of them starts with the letters TS, followed by a space, two digits, another space and then another numerical sequence (no colons), so something like this - TS 07 12090.

I've also been a long time Suzuki owner - drove my first Suzuki over thirty years ago, I've owned several, and work closely with my local dealer - I have never heard of SEPS - the dealer tool used for diagnostics & programming the vehicles is, I believe a Tech2.

There is an online service AllData that you can check for TSBs that are applicable to your vehicle - it is a subscription service, so there is a cost if you want to read the bulletins, but, you can at least review the titles - I found nothing relating to a catalytic converter issue

Mine came up two days ago @104K miles. My mechanic Checked today, apparently is the catalyst. I'm going to take it to the muffler shop and let you know the outcome.

What was your code??

Has it any relationship to the discussion??

How did your mechanic diagnose?? Tail pipe gases, CAT temp?? Back pressure??

You should have started you own thread if what you have does not have any reference to the thread subject..

Your what "came up" .. "apparently"...

A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
  • A damaged or failed oxygen sensor (HO2S)
  • Downstream oxygen sensor (HO2S) wiring damaged or connected improperly
  • The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
  • Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / muffler / exhaust pipe
  • Retarded spark timing
  • The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings
  • Leaking fuel injector or high fuel pressure
  • Cylinder misfire
  • Oil contamination
So again, I ask which of these did your mechanic verify/eliminate??
