I have a 88 sami with the OME medium springs, 1.5 inch lift, and 2 inch shackles. I had the shackles done first, realized my stock springs were hosed, and then added the OME springs. I believe the OME are the Dakar model.

Tires are BFG 235/75/15.

Ride quality is terrible, bouncier than stock, and pretty rough. I do have 3.5 to 4 inches of lift between the 2 and I've dealt with the steering. The shocks (and the kit in general) have no numbers I can see, but came with this:

Samurai OME: Old Man Emu for Samurai, SJ410, Sierra and Santana

"The Medium springs, shocks and bushings" is the one I have installed. So I have 2" shackles and then 1.5 OME springs.

The other side is the vehicle clearance looks great and the stance is great. It is exactly what I want from that perspective. Is there any way to improve ride quality without losing the stance? This isn't a rock crawler, just for mountain passes in Silverton CO.

This is my second Samurai, I do realize it isn't a passenger car. I've searched the forum and can't quite find this question. Thanks to anyone who can shed a little light on this for us.

Ride quality - I just want to make a suggestion - you're not actually comparing the OME ride quality to stock, you're comparing it to the ride you had with the original dead sagging stock springs.

Many of the ride quality complaints with OME gear can be traced back to an incorrect selection of springs, the medium springs you have chosen indicate that they are suited to carry the vehicle manufacturers full design loading plus an additional 100~175 lbs - if you have less load than this (say a driver alone), you will have an excessively rough ride.

The second area of consideration will be your tires & tire pressures - if you're running an LT tire, chances are the sidewalls are excessively stiff, and given the light weight of the Samurai, they will not be as compliant as they could/should.

I'm not going to suggest that you shouldn't modify your vehicle to suit your needs, but I need you to understand than the manufacturer chose specific OE components, and the more you deviate from OE spec, the bigger the impact of your modifications - you need to understand how the modifications affect the vehicle and then decide if you can accept the compromise.

One of the Suzukis I have here has had the suspension tweaked and tuned - poly bushes, sport springs, larger sway bars, larger disks & calipers - it now corners like it is on rails and can outbrake many a more expensive, high performance, sports car, but I no longer drive it (my son does, and his sister loves it), I find the ride bone jarring - oh - I forgot - it also has Recaro sport seats, which are THE most comfortable seats I have sat in, but they don't compensate for the ride :(

Tires are of course LT, it also has some pretty beefy front and rear bumpers. Glad I chose the medium springs, can't imagine the heavy duty. I would think with the bumpers I would be in line with the weight, or moreso.

Sadly, I've probably only EVER driven samurai's with dead stock sagging springs.

Now to look for tire pressure, at least it can help.

The shocks are no-name, RRO stickers on them, I can't find a single number. Would changing them help, and if so, which ones?

I'd like to believe you have the problem pinpointed here - and so it's clear - this is just my opinion, and it's worth exactly what you're paying for it ;)

A number of the off-road vendors try to move more product by keeping the costs down (which is not a bad approach), but, when shocks are selected "off the shelf" based on open & closed length and the mounting style, you may just end up with a shock that fits, but it's original application may have been a vehicle with twice the weight, and so the valving is not suited to the lighter Samurai, and you end up where you are.

Old Man Emu is one of the few off road suspension companies who have an in house suspension engineering team, and design both their own springs & shocks themselves.

OME is what I use - if you go that route, you may have to remove the extended shackles - but before you do that, drop OME a line at [email protected] - in my experience they are always willing to assist, and they'll be happy to recommend the appropriate OME shocks.

Reduced tire pressure to 26, man, thats a huge difference. Going to do the shocks too, have to check for shock length. Thanks folks, and thanks for the email address.
