So, I just purchased this nicely done 1987 Samurai off of Ebay the other day.

I haven't even received it yet.
I bought it to use as a summer daily driver and in the winter I have some Camoplast Tatou 4S Tracks coming.
I live in a ski in/ski out (gonna be "zuk in/zuk out" this winter) cabin and I now have to get two small kids to school every so often. So the Samurai is gonna be my SnoZuki!!!
I hope she's gonna be a reliable little unit.
I'll post more pics as I progress with it.

I PURCHASED THIS SAMURAI JX IN 2002 FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER WITH JUST OVER 100,000 MILES IT WAS COMPLETELY STOCK AND IN GOOD CONDITION. I DROVE IT FOR ABOUT 15K BEFORE THE STOCK ENGINE SLUNG A ROD, AT THIS POINT I DECIDED TO DO A FULL FRAME OFF BUILD UP TO FIX THE THINGS I DID NOT LIKE ABOUT THE SAMURAI TO MAKE IT MORE CAPABLE OFF-ROAD RIG AS WELL AS A DAILY DRIVER. IT TOOK, COUNTLESS MAN HOURS, SEVERAL YEARS , AND $14000 (IN PARTS ALONE). THE FACTORY LEAF SPRING SUSPENSION WAS CONVERTED TO MULTI LINK WITH COIL SPRINGS FRONT AND REAR, THE REAR AXLE WAS UPGRADED TOP A LARGER ONE, LOCKING DIFFERENTIALS AND OEM SUZUKI GEARS WERE INSTALLED FRONT AND REAR, UPGRADED BRAKES, 33/13.50R15 TOYO OPEN COUNTRY MTS ON 15X10 ION ALLOY ALUMINUM WHEELS. I INSTALLED A BRAND NEW 1.6 LITER 16V FUEL INJECTED ENGINE, BIGGER RADIATOR, ELEC. FUEL PUMP, AND CUSTOM EXHAUST SYSTEM (VERY QUIET). Welcome! Nice Samurai! I know the guy that use to own it. I went off roading with him after he put on his driveshafts, and WOW.... that Samurai will get you up any hill, or through thick mud. Its an awesome rig, but Paul needs a full size pickup to haul his boat. The samurai should be very reliable, the motor is brand new, I saw it come out of the crate a few years ago when it was delivered. Matter a fact I doubt the engine is broken in yet, I think he only put a few hundred miles since the swap. You wont regret your purchase. Enjoy!

First off that's a super nice rig. Only things I can think of is the 7" backspace on the tracks. But if it fits a tracker it must have a spacer to comp for it. Also if their DOT legal? Super nice plans you have there none the less.

If it's tricky to drive on the streets it's most likely the RRO coil spring kit. They have a completely stupid geometry for it. It wouldn't be too hard to rework with some cutting and welding and it would be safe to drive on road. If you're driving kids and using it as a DD then I would recommend fixing it, or putting a different suspension on it.

Lots of other good stuff on the rig but he's trying to get his money back on what he put into it by asking $12,500. Generally you get about %50 of your investment back on a rig if you're lucky. If you got the money to spend and don't mind then go for it. It will save you the trouble of hunting down the parts and doing it yourself. On the downside, you don't know how hard it's been driven on the parts or who installed them and how capable they were at fabricating and building an off road rig. I generally try to stay away from pre-built rigs for that reason.


On those tracks in the video, I've seen a few tracks on zukies, but I don't think I've ever seen that set before. They look like a really flat footprint for such small leading rollers. The camoplast tracks that you linked to look like a much better snow track. You may need to upgrade the power steering though. I don't know if the tracker power steering will handle that load. Maybe a ram assist?

And this rig has a few hundred "test" miles, to make sure everything is tight and solid. It has not been abused in anyway, shape, or form. the motor has been broken in as suzuki requirements.

You assume to much... but I know the real facts about this samurai.

Asking $12500 for something that he spent $15000 on IS trying to recoupe a lot of the cost of his parts. ( $8 grand is a much more reasonable price point for the equipment listed) Once the parts are used, at all, you shouldn't be asking for more than 50 percent for parts for the reasons that I mentioned earlier. As for labor, forget about it.

Making assumptions would be to assume the owner got the work done by a reputable shop and assumed he didn't put any rough miles on it off road. I see you edited the part about having dificulty driving it to the store, maybe you should edit out the part about it going though mud and steep hill climbs too. Driving with lockers does cause issues driving on road, especially on a short wheel base vehicle like a samurai. Driving in the snow in 4wd with a front autolocker is not a good idea at all. I would change the detroit lockers to selectable lockers if you plan on doing DD onroad and snow driving on road.



The RRO coil kit has problems, thats not an assumption. I would HOPE there was no axle wrap with a linked coil suspension... :rolleyes: The fact that it uses dual unwristed radius arms with a panhard puts severe stress on the axle housings and the bushing on the links and panhard. Easy enough to Unpin one side of the radius arm (top or bottom) and it will aleviate a lot of the stress, but it doesn't fix the rest of the issues. The radius arm you leave pined on top and botom really needs to be a lot taller and the shocks need to be mounted outside further and the rear end needs reworking if the Y brace was welded as per RRO instructions.

If you already bought it, then I hope you enjoy it and make the necesary modifications for the conditions you're using it in. If you havn't bought it yet, I would try to haggle a little bit on the price, it wouldn't hurt to try.

I learned the HARD way to stay away from built rigs OR atleast check them over with a fine tooth comb. My Sami was magazine built and was a basket case when I bought it. It looked great on the magazine article but was totally put together wrong. Everything from driveshaft angles wrong, shocks hitting the frame with only 2" of travel, the winch attached with only 2 bolts, ect.....

I have heard alot of not good things about the RRO coil kit and that is why I just went with the Trail Tough YJ m/l kit and called it done. I haul around my 2yr old and love driving my Sami to work which requires running the freeway at 65-70mph.

I am pretty sure Big B has already bought this Sami and hopefully it will work out great... but alot of unknowns with buying anything unseen.
