Does anyone know if the sx4 engine has hydraulic or mechanical lifters? If mechanical ,what are the clearances? Is it much of a job? I am dealing with a ticking/knocking noise that disappears when warm.

how true. it's a shame nobody ever does this and why should they? suzuki will warranty it for 100k miles anyway. why spend the extra money if you don't need to? and if anybody is wondering, no, suzuki won't pay for it under warranty to have the valve adjustment done. just another dumbass thing suzuki does that doesn't make sense:confused:

i'm not sure what that converts to in miles, but you're probably not quite at 24,000 miles. i could be wrong, i'm too lazt right now to convert it. regardless, i haven't seen a sx4 that made valve noise at even higher miles, but i suppose it's possible. i have heard noisy a/c compressors. might want to check that. but in all honesty, your car is in warranty, so just take it to the dealer. unless the warranty is different in canada, that is.

I thought everyone knew how to convert kms. 2 methods- you take the lenght of a polar bear's gestation period times the width in inches of an adult male beaver tail or - 1 km is aprox 3/4 of a mile. Seriously, I could of kicked my ass this morning. I opened the hood to check my oil and what did I see on a large sticker under the hood - valve clearance specs! - int. .008 ex .012. My nearest dealer is about an hour and 15min. away, so it is a pain to take it there for nonwarrantable work. I will try it myself. I am thinking that this is not my problem anyway. Because, with mecanical lifters, the noise should be constant. I'm thinking that an overfueling or( valve timing?) on start up could be it. I still may have to make the journey. There is a TSB (technical service bulletin) from Suzuki on this showing exactly how it is done and what shims to use is needed and how to measure clearances cold and hot - seems too involved for me to want to try and do it myself. You will need shims to do the job right and only the dealer will have them - You should even call them in advance to prepare them for this as NO dealer I have talked to that had done one of these jobs yet and all would have to order the shim set.

Hey, thanks a bunch bsedwebt. You saved me a bunch of work. I was hoping for the old screw and jamnut type of adjustment. No such luck I guess. I owe you a beer next time you're up my way.

bsedwebt is correct about the tsb. it is an involved "maintenance" repair and the dealer will have to order the shims. plus, as i remember it. there isn't a shim pack. you have to buy them individually, which is a pain because you'll have to down the car to measure stuff to find the sizes needed and then wait for god knows how long for the shims to arrive, and then hope you ordered and received the right ones.
