I would like more stability for my 88 Samurai I talked to my uncle and he mentioned switching the axles with a jeep or pickup. Would I just switch the whole axle? Would it be worth the effort? I plan on going around town and on trails no extreme rock climbing. He also mentioned getting different tires not quite sure how to measure tires but here's a picture. My Samurai has a 3" lift I believe.

If you aren't going to be over-exerting the drive train on the trail, or climbing waterfalls, swapping out the axles would be a waste of money. The stock rims are 5.5" wide. Go to some easy to find 8" wheels and some wider tires. You can also use a set of quality wheel spacer/adaptors and you can move the tire's outside track even farther out.
Here is a zook on stock axles with about 2" of lift and an outside tire track about 4.5" wider than stock.

Look closely at the fender flairs to see just how far the tires stick out.

These are the Spidertrax wheel adaptors I used:
