I have an 87 Samurai that I keep on my ranch. The ranch is 360 miles from where I live and it's about 45 miles from the nearest town with an auto parts store. So fixing problems can take time.

The Sammy has been running fine for the last 3 or 4 years. Only trouble I've had is replacing the fuel pump and fuel filter about a year ago until now.

The last trip out to the ranch turned up a problem. When I was driving it I noticed that when I let up on the accelerator, I hear a roar underneath the body and when I apply the gas the roar disappears and it runs fine with no unusual noise. This noise happens whether I have the clutch engaged or not. I just have to let up on the accelerator in any gear and I hear the noise.

I'm wondering if I have a U joint that is about to go out.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

You need to locate the noise so to assist in figuring it out. Start the car and "sweep" the undercarriage with your phone/camcorder.

My first thought was throwout bearing in the clutch/trans.

You hear it;
When stationary? -- Rules out u-joints if so.
When driving?
All gears?
All RPM's?

define "roar" if you can please, and where does it sound like its coming from? whats it like when coasting? as in just enough power to keep the car rolling?

When driving? **** Only when driving
All gears? **** As I noted in the original post, I doesn't matter what gear, I hear it. If I have my foot on the clutch or off the clutch, there is not difference.
All RPM' **** I don't rev it to fast, I hardly ever get out of third gear, but all RPM's that I drive, I hear it when I let off the accelerator.

I can't isolate the noise when it is at idle, it does not make the noise then. I don't have the ability to safely raise it up and run it in gear to get a better handle on the noise source.

It sounds like something spinning around out of balance. There is no clanking or metallic sounds.

I can't say for sure where it is coming from, only that is under the body and I would say behind the engine. Probably anywhere from the bell housing to past the transfer case/transmission.

It makes the sound when I let off the accelerator and as the speed slows down the noise lessens. When I stop or give it gas, the noise stops.

front pinion bearing in the differential is a possibility, or a loose nut holding the pinion flange onto the shaft. If its only on the overrun (coasting) and disappears with power then thats one thing that will definitely make a noise in that situation as load will make it move back into the correct place and unloading makes it move out of the correct mesh.
Can you sit someone in the back and see if they can pinpoint the noise thru the floor?

It could be a gearbox bearing, but they are usually noisy on both drive and coast.

centre diff in the transfer case is also a possibility. Have you checked the oil levels in the transfer case and rear diff lately? its also worth changing both and looking for any metal in the drained oil after its settled for an hour or so.
That could help point you in the right direction.
