What is this screw hole next to the visor bracket for? There's one on the driver's side and one on passenger side and it looks like the screw was recently removed so something did go there. Anyone know? (I don't even know if these pictures will upload properly).
The second picture is a switch I found under the dash. Is this an add on, or a stock switch and if it's stock--what is it for?

Ah, grasshopper, you are discovering the mysteries of the Samurai...

The threaded hole is part of the hard-top hold-down system which attaches to the window frame through those threaded holes. I had a hardtop on my truck when I first bought it but it was falling apart so I took it off and installed a ragtop.


The switch resets the "check engine" indicator which turns on at regular intervals based on the odometer. The lamp lights up, you refer to the owners manual concerning preventive maintenence then you reach under the dash and set the switch to the opposite position after performing the procribed maintenence. X-thousand miles later, the light illuminates again. You repeat the process and set the switch to the opposite position. It's the Pre-OBD1 Suzuki "Honor System" of preventative maintence.

My borderline-psychic powers fairly tingles at your next question - the answer of which will be "Look in the carburetor throat near the top edge for a small tube with a diagonally cut edge that sits in the venturi. If this tube is missing, you need to spend 15 bucks for one - available at any aftermarket vendor. Install it and the flat spot on the throttle response will go away..."

Of course, while I am being a bit silly - all of the above is true! It's a rite of passsage when a new owner asks about the switch. An old-timer answers sagely and the floodgate of Samurai knowledge is opened. Soon all is revealed and you are no longer the "new person"!

I appreciate all your responses! Here's another question. I found the missing prop rod for the hood under the carpet inside the truck. I think I found where it goes on the engine end, but it doesn't appear to fit right on the hood side. Maybe I have it backwards, and it's too cold to go back out to the garage and mess with it for the night, but maybe someone can take a pic or two of where both ends actually go with the hood in the open position.
And what else did I have....I can't recall off the top of my head now, but I'm sure it'll come to me later.

hood prop rod...

The hood prop rod is about three feet long. The end that fits in to the front of the body has a short Z-bend in it and has a plastic bushing that fits into the body hole. The end that fits into the hood is bent to a shape similar to the letter "P" - sorta like a shepards crook.

My guess is that you have found the jack crank handle which is stored under the driver's seat. ;)

Okay, I do have the hood prop, it's just missing the bushing for the body hole. I do have it stuck in a hole in the body right now, but it's the hood end that I can't figure out which hole it goes into. The rod is a little too big for the holes. However, I'm talking about holes in the hood in the corner of the hood right above where the rod goes into the body. Maybe the prop rod holds it open diagonally, so I should be looking for a hole near the opposite side of the hood?
I did also find the jack crank handle, and another crank handle that I'm not sure what it goes to. Most of the little missing parts I found under the carpet--that must be where he stored everything. LOL

if you don't have the bushing to secure the hood prop then you need to take it out untill you do, or zip tie it so it doesn't rattle loose and fallinto your belts while driving down the road. I havn't used the prop in many years. It gets in the way when working on the engine and it's a lot easier and gives you better access to the engine to open the hood all the way to the windshield bump stop. The rubber chunk right in the center top of the windshield frame.

Usually people ask about the check engine light before they ever even know about that switch under the dash... you're ahead of the game already!

Thanks Baratacus. I think I found that rubber piece you mentioned in the glove box. The guy I bought it from said the hood flew open while driving once and dented the hood which has since had a poor primer job done to it. Anyway, the rubber stop isn't on the windshield and I found it in the glove box.
Anyone have a clue what the 3rd piece I found goes to? One prop rod, one jack crank, what's the 3rd? I suppose it could belong to a different car since there was also a hubcap in the back with it.
I'm gonna post some engine questions soon. I'll appreciate any advice or help on those, too. I'll be pulling the car into the basement where there's heat and tearing it down to do gasket replacements, timing belt, H20 pump, etc. Stay tuned please, I'll need to ask stuff.

Instead of trying to put the old rubber piece back on (double stick tape...) you might want to do a fold-down windshield conversion. Many of the vendors have the kits they have put together with the stock zook parts. The bumpers used for the conversion just bolt on in the original threaded holes in the windshield.



Everyone got the fold-down windshield except for those of us in the US... But you can still by the parts from Suzuki if you know the part numbers. The vendors just made it easier.

So the piece that used to be there on the windshield won't work? That just looks a little too tall, sort of distracting compared to the stock one.
I just spent $800 at roadless.com on a bunch of needed stuff and then some wanted stuff, too. But I will also put that kit on one day.

Oh, the stock piece will work, but it will just come off again (doublestick tape). The fold down kit uses two instead of one and they are just a little longer than the US 'bumper' thing that usually goes away with wear. The new ones are just long enough to hold the windshield off the raised center of the hood.




And they can save the glass in your windshield when the hood pops up on the highway... ask me how I know.

I lost my rubber bump stop a long time ago. right now I use the offroad lights for the hood bumper. It just rests against them when it's up. I've never had the hood pop open on me while driving, but I also always make sure I've got it latched tight.. sometimes it takes a couple slams, but when it's on tight, it's not going anywhere.
