I have been told the best one to get is a 91' or later (for US) because its fuel injected, 1.6 16v with a/c and has a lower ratio for 5th gear. Is there anything I am missing. This is the California market I am lookin in fyi.
I am currently driving my friend's 87' 1.3 with lower gearing in the xfer case. How much different is it than a FI one with 16v?

I dont think it's really hard to find an 87-88 with a conversion to the EFI engine. When I selected my Samurai I wanted the higher 5th gear with all the open road around here, with the 1.6L 16v I'm able to use 5th gear often but I have 4.10 Toyota diffs and the 6.4 xfer case ratios. I cant hold it into strong headwinds or up grades without dropping into 4th but on the flats I can sail along at 70. I can make it do 80 more but 65-70 feels pretty fast on 35" tires. Gearing correctly is absolutely critical for a road going Sami with some meat on the bones.

Many had AC, less still have it, it gets removed to save weight. I wanted AC so I installed it, it's not a huge pain in the ass but it does take some doing. It becomes a pain in the ass if your using AC with PS.

I wouldnt get to hung up on year as long as the seller has it setup up basically how you want it, so many of the mods are very common. To bad your in CA, I would have you come give this one a try as I may not opt to pay to have it shipped to the PI with me.

Out here it is, smog is very strict and therefore the few that have EFI are usually factory ones.

I agree, the 87 I am driving has had xfer case work and diff work. But I its a bone stock 1.3 8v and its a dog on the highway. best I can get is 65 in 4th or 5th if im flat or down hill. I want one that will do 70 easily but still have decent low range.

That's the hard part, is finding the one with all the best mods on it while still passing smog. I am almost ready to just register one in Oregon where my parents live just so I can do all the horsepower mods.

If I could I would definitely want a test drive if you can do 70 in 5th.

There are many many reasons I abandoned the West Coast, greedy intrusive govt' is just one of them. I could power it with an 7.3L IDI IH Diesel and straight pipe it through the hood and likely nobody would look twice. CA and WA are the worst places I have ever lived as far as restriction of personal freedom.

When I lived in WA I registered my camper in OR because it was nearly $1000 cheaper every year. The strange part is an 87 Samurai with the 16v is safer, more efficient and has considerably less emissions, but NOPE, dont care! its the wrong engine for the vehicle hence it will not be allowed. I had a 2300cc turbo pancake engine in my 69 VW type I. I literally had to throw a 1600 single port engine back into it to run it through emissions, then swap the engines back for the rest of the year. Luckily the engine swap took me a total of 25 minutes. With the sniffer the 2300 was slightly cleaner, but again, it's to far from OEM hence it is not allowed without some lengthy processes through the state. I can see laws that protect or serve to better the lives of citizens, but the overreach is appalling, the blatant money grabs are shameful, worse in CA now that the whole state is in so much financial trouble. I think they have literally taxed to many wealthy people and companies right out the door.

Make sure you put some decal or OR based sports team plate frame or something. They were nailing folks in WA with OR plates because of all the Huskys and Seahawks stickers.

Borrow an OR address and that works quite well. I have never lived in OR but I understand they are far more reasonable than WA and definitely more so than CA. Sorry about the rant but the nonsensical bullshit one has to deal with on the West Coast strikes a nerve with me.

With parents on OR your good,if you get pulled over you dont have to say SHIT. If you have to talk tell what I did, your out to visit friends and check out some schools, considering relocation yadda yadda.

If your ever out I will let you drive it. It will do 85 by GPS but thats pushing it. 70 is fairly comfortable but the road and engine noise can wear ya down after 100 miles or so. I find 65-70 is comfortable. Going up hills or driving into a headwind will put you into 4th pretty quick. You wont really want to exceed 70 with it anyway, it just feels unsafe at those speeds setup the way it is. Blasting along at 65 and your good, its comfortable and stable at that speed but still noisy. I lined it with XXX to deaden sound but it is a ragtop. I'm at around 3500' here so at sea level you have further advantage as far as power is concerned.

No need to apologize, you basically said how I feel and is the reason I am moving out of CA in the future. I would love to do a v6 swap or a turbo diesel swap and that will never be street legal here. I have no problem driving around with OR plates. I did that on another car from CO for awhile because it had good reg and I didn't see the point of re-regging when I had 2 years left on it. At any rate I would just want a good looking zuke with the ability to do 70 without much trouble. The trouble is finding one that is just right. Out here they are expensive too. I'm seeing them in a range from 2k all the way up to 10k!

Prices range out here to but this is Jeep country. I'm not real sure how much someone would have to spend to get mine away from me. Offroad vehicles are never worth what you put into them but I think I'll just see what some folks will offer. I can only take so much with me and thinking I want to keep my Vmax and my listening room.

The stock 91-on (US) Samurai was a 1.3 8V TBI engine, any 1.6 is a conversion.
