Just bought a convertible Jimny and experiencing a few issues.

I had the wheels balanced today as there was a juddering at 50mph but it has started juddering at 45mph with a metallic sounding banging noise coming from the rear. The steering wheel vibrations are quite violent that I cant hold the wheel straight. It disappears when I hit either 50mph or 40mph.

It happens intermittently but I have noticed that it has happened mainly when:

a) Accelerating downhill
b) Accelerating uphill

Any ideas to what it is?

I have the vehicle booked in for a check on Monday so I hope that they witness it happening. Do you think I should offer to take them for a ride in it myself?

Have you done a visual check of things?
How about the drive shaft ujoints?
Play in the rear dif?
Part sounds like death wobble. Any lift to the thing? Angles OK?
Steering stabilizer?
None of these are hard to fix. ('cept one)

It's an 04 registration.

TBH I wouldn't know what I'd be looking for if I did my own inspection! I just hope that it is evidenced when I take it to the garage on Monday. Someone said it might be a UJ? Is this not tested at the MOT? It passed one on Monday.

U joint shouldn't go out that quick but it can happen. I don't have a coil sprung suspension in my samurai, so I don't know exactly what to look for there. I did have a sportage With a coil suspension, a lot of times if you have a shock or strut go out it puts more wear on the bushings on that corner. Loose bushings can cause clunking and shifting of swaybars, and end links. That would cause a shimmy or shuddering...

No mater what type of springs you have, you are going to have ujoints in the drivetrain.
How do you know how old they are?

I guessed it was something like that...
shoot, pretty much in Delaware (DMV) as long as the horn works it's good. Unlike other nearby states that you leave it and they pull some of it apart, in DE you never leave the thing and just drive in and drive out. As long as the tires don't stick out too far... one year the guy did make me put on rear mud flaps.
On another car I had, it failed the emissions in one location, I drove it right to another and they passed it fine.

well if it's an '04 jimny then they can't be more than 5 or 6 years old. I blew my first one out when it was 22 years old.

I was asking about the springs to try and figgure out what it might be besides the u-joints. U-joints tend to vibrate at a certain RPM and will get worse as you accelerate. They don't smooth out as you accelerate past a certain point.

..i have to disagree to an extent on that point. i had one that had one end completely broken off, so the diveshafts were actually able to touch... started to vibrate at 30km/h (~18mph), was worst at about 65-70 km/h (~40mph) and wasnt too bad after 90km/h. (~55mph)... having said that, it was still extremely noisy and still had bad vibrating above that speed, just not as bad
