hi , ive a 2001 jimny which drives fine, but when i stop to reverse into a parking bay the rear brakes one or bothe sides , not sure yet.. come on,, like im putting the parking brake on,, could this be the srings that hold the shoes in place ? how easy are the drums to get off?

ditto on the rear drums.
I bet you are going to see you should replace all hardware, shoes, and drums.
It's the best thing to do. (and cheap insurance)

If/when the brakes get overheated, the springs can lose their temper. They can still look good but already have lost most of their "springiness". I'd agree that maybe it's time for a complete brake overhaul. I always take the car to the car wash with high-pressure spray wands beforehand, to try to minimize the brake dust and dirt. Even with that, it can be a messy job -- not hard, just dirty.
