I just purchased an 87 sammy with stock carb. I have issues with my carb and possibly my ecm and it won't pass smog.
The carb will not idle without it being at higher rpm-warm or cold. It has good spark, good fuel, and great even compressoion in all 4 cylinders. It drives fine and has good power. I have put new plugs, cap, rotor, and checked both pcv and egr-both fine. I have noticed the choke is not working properly but it appears I have good vacuum otherwise. I plan on rebuilding carb, fixing choke issues, and checking all vacuum connections.
I have also checked all of the feedback circuits from the ecm to its sensors and all appear to work per manual tests. I have not found where I can check if the ecm itself to see if it is working-which I would like to verify as well since it controls so many things on the carb.
So I guess my two main questions are what other things I can do to get the carb running better and how to test the ecm for being properly operational.
thanks in advance

Napa still has the carb kits for the samurai. even with my samurai running well , I have troubles passing the CA smog test. I bought a new cat. I install it the day before the test and remove it right after and store in in the box for next time. the new cat is very effecient and give just the extra exhaust cleaning i need.

you need to go through that ratsnest of vacuum hoses and make sure they are all hooked up to the correct ports. Replace it all with fresh hose, the stuff is inexpensive and you need a good seal. Check all of your one-way valves to make sure they are on the correct direction. Check your vacuum switches to make sure they all have the correct connectors. Read up in the FSM on the vacuum system. Usually that's the root of most rough running issues with the samurai.

Thanks guys for your help. I just picked up a carb kit from Napa and will start checking the "ratsnest" of vacuum lines and valves/solenoids on and around the carb and emissions systems tomorrow. I will let you know what I find out to hopefully help out others. Maybe there are some trends others can use in the future.
Do you know how I can check the ecm for proper operation? I checked the feedback circuits for the different sensors/valves etc. per the "zukboys" manual and everything appears to be working but I am not sure if properly otherwise. I disconnected the ecm and was able to start the sammy without any visible change in running. I am not sure what that means.
Thanks again.

I forgot to mention I do plan on changing out the cat to hopefully help with emissions. Do you guys have any suggestions on a good aftermarket cat that is acceptable to CA smog stations and won't break the bank.
Thanks.

oh and don't forget the O2 sensor. They are cheap and very easy to install, it couldn't hurt. They only way to know if it's giving faulty readings is if you have an air fuel meter. As far as the cat goes, they all are pretty expensive. Don't get a high flow cat, those won't pass... I do know that... :(
