87 Samurai....my Sammy does not start sometimes unless I rap on the starter solenoid? Does entire starter need to be replaced ? Can just the solenoid be replaced? Can the solenoid be disassembled & cleaned? Is the whole process worth it?

Yeah...starter mptor BRUSH contact going bad causes that same "need to hammer" fix. I'm with XL...replace both the starter and solenoid if you intend to keep her. Starter only if not. Solenoids DO come separate BTW.

Double check your wiring connections for loose or corroded contacts first though.

Oh! One other thing...if you don't hear at LEAST a click when you hit the key...I'd suspect a switch or wiring connection problem. Anywhere from the ignition switch to the solenoid via any OTHER switches in between (auto trans neutral safety or clutch pedal start safety switch) which ever may be applicable in your case. You should be able to apply 12V + right from your battery to the small gauge wire spade connector post on the solenoid to rule out a circuit / switch problem. Make SURE you're in neutral when you try this though.
