how often should I change ignition coils on our 2004 XL 7 and why would all the 12 volt accessory plugs not work? Thanks!

Only if found to be inoperative (which is rather rare) and check your under dash fuses. ;)

Code scan the vehicle. Bad coil packs will code and tell you which coil and spark plug to further troubleshoot.

The coil packs have a "probe" or "lance" between the actual coil and the plug - this is the equivalent of the plug leads and is available separately from aftermarket sources (NGK is one) and I think should be replaced periodically, in the same manner that you would replace plug leads.

A few months back I replaced mine because they were starting to tear around the top, and I had a concern with moisture getting into the plug wells - the vehicle appeared to be running well - but - the difference with the new probes was noticeable.

I've found that the coil packs won't always throw a code even when they are running some way below max. efficiency.
