I just bought the following:

1987 sami tt, all toyota upgrades, toyota 22r engine, toyota trans and tcase, toyota axles 4:10s, toyota driveshafts, toyota steering gearbox, lowrange offroad hysteer kit, lifted yj leafs front and in rear, shackel reversal in frt, new windshield, lots of new parts, runs great, great offroad. Body cleand inside and out.

It was a good deal (I think) and I really like it so far, but I am new to the 4 x 4 world and especially Sami's. Here are my questions:

1) I expected a bunch more power with this engine. It seems to accelerate slow and tops out at about 55-60mph. It also bogs down when climbing. Is this normal, a tired motor, a poorly tuned motor, etc...? The engine has 100k plus on it.
2) It currently has 32 x 11.5 x 15 tires. They are bald. In looking for replacements, I was thinking of going down a size or two for performance as this is as much of an around town car as it is a serious off road vehicle. thoughts?
3) It is really, really noisy inside. I know this comes with the territory, but is there any hope to quiet this thing down?
4) It has a tubular red what appears to be a cherry bomb muffler in line prior to a more traditional looking muffler before exiting the car. I am confused why this would be done?
5) The speedo is not hooked up. the previous owner said he could not locate an adapter to go from the sami speedo to the toyota cable. Any thoughts?
6) The e-brake is not hooked up. Is this a problem with connections again, or simply a needs to be connected issue?

Enough for now. I appreciate any help!

Check for smoking, if present you may have an issu on your hands and may need to overhaul the engine. If no smoke then your gearing could be a potential issue

go for replacement 31s

Noise killer make an under bonnet and a transmission tunnel soundproofing kit which would be direct fits into the sam

throw it away, it'll reduce the noise levels

cannot comment without taking a look

Alot of things going on there, and I am tired tonight so I will just hit what I see right off.
The suspension is set up for a much larger tire, so I wouldn't go smaller. It will look downright silly. If those are 32's I would look into some 35's. The toys will handle them.
I would guess that the previous owner realized too late that the 22R was not a stronger motor for low end torque. You didn't mention gears so I would also guess (from the performance) that they are pretty tall (stock).

I would also have to argue with the rear leaf packs being YJ's. They look way too short. That rear spring eye should be almost at the back edge of the body, Especially without any relocation bracket out front.

Nice project though. I always wanted a tintop.
I will look a little closer in the morning.
G'night folks.

Thanks for the info. This might be a dumb question, but I am wondering what you guys think the value of this thing is with all of the stuff that has been done to it. I am curious if I got a good deal.

do a compression check to verify whether or not the engine is putting out the power it should be. regardless of the torque the 22r puts out, it's still got 1000cc's on the samurai engine and should have at least it's equivelant of low end grunt and a bunch more high end power. unfortunately when you replace the 1.3l engine with a 2.4l engine and replace the drive train with a toyota drive train, you're adding a bunch of weight that will negate a lot of your power gains.

I agree that the springs do not look like yj's. I'd take any other claims from the previous owner with a grain of salt if that's the case. If you go with smaller tires you better go with sprig under or switch to a different spring pack. That rig sits way too high for the tires that are on it now, let alone going smaller.

For a vehicle with all of the stuff you listed, I'd probably put it around 4 or 5k resale. To build a rig with all of the stuff you listed, it would cost you about 10k in parts and labor.
