I have a 1995 pontiac firefly 1.0L standard transmission. I had to replace the front main seal a year ago, I goofed it up and it leaked a little oil for a year till I could get the time to fix it again. During that time I replaced the oil pan/pump gasket and the timing belt at the same time. Finally I got a second attempt to fix it, however now I can't get the timing belt to stop slipping about 5-8 gears on the crank shaft gear!! This is now the 5th time now that I have taken it apart and put it back together and now matter how tight or loose I have the belt it won't stop slipping. The timing belt is only a year old with less then 4,000kms on it, no cracks or worn lobes or any signs of wear.

The tensioner bearing seems to spin freely, no noises there, and I torque it down to the required 20 ft pounds and I haven't replaced it. When I install the belt I spin the motor a few times by hand to make sure it seats and it's fine but as soon as I leave the driveway I can feel the lose of power and the belt slipping instantly...

Things I have tried:
-thoroughly cleaned the cam and crank gears where the timing belt rides with brake cleaner. Also cleaned the timing belt with soap and water.

-tightened the belt down to the point of ZERO reflect on the belt when it's cold. I've also tried the belt with loose tension with no difference.

Things I'm thinking it could be:
-when I tighten the alternator/water pump belt I have no slack in the belt as it's serpentine, is that causing too much resistance in the crank pulley and causing the belt to slip?

-maybe it's a bad tensioner afterall?

-there was an oil leak near the timing belt maybe oil go on the timing belt and has destroyed it?? (even though it feels clean)

Are you sure it's the belt that is slipping and not the crankshaft pulley moving on the nose of the crank?

Remove the crank pulley and check the condition of the key/keyway on the pulley & crank snout.

Hey Fordem thanks for the reply, I made sure the woodruff key and was aligned and also tried to move the crankshaft gear with a socket and I couldn't. I definitely torqued the crankshaft gear on there as well.

On another note, I tightened the belt to 75% on the tensioner and put it back together again. This time the belt only jumped 2 teeth as opposed to the 5-8 it normally did on 50% tension tightness. So on my 6th time taking it apart and putting it back together I tightened it to about 90% tension. That seems to have done it! So far on my 15 minute test run to get it up to temperature no slippage has occurred (and no breakage). My only worry about the tightness it's at is the potential damage it could do to my cam shaft bearings. I'm hoping that the year of use on the timing belt has expanded it and putting it to 90% tension would be the same as 50-60% on a new belt. Fingers crossed.

I also got ahold of my mechanic friend who told me timing belts are one time use, you shouldn't reinstall them for this reason. They stretch and become difficult to tension properly and are prone to slippage.

I've never had one "slip" like this if its tensioned properly. Simply put, you have had it too loose. Re-use is not recommended, especially if there is any oil contamination present.

I'd have replaced the belt 5 slips ago.
