Hey guys new here from Chandler, AZ. I decided to get an '87 Samurai to keep at my cabin up in No. AZ. It is an '87 and I am going through it to get it "worthy" before it goes north where I have no tools, lift or garage. There was some play in the wheel bearings that started and it's on the lift now. The hubs are not stock and I am more of a hot rod guy, so I haven't messed with auto hubs much. Pics are below. It looks like I need to remove the 4 phillips screws to release the hubs but they seem a little soft and a couple of them look like they would easily strip if I turn to hard. Before I remove anything further I wanted an expert opinion. Also, I notice some end play on the axle. Is that normal? Thanks, Tom

Welcome!

Those auto hubs are from a Track/Kick. They are Suzuki, not aftermarket.
They are nice for the occasional trip down a dirt road or through the mud. They lock up to make traction when there is load on the axle and the axle is pushing forward.

If you try to run those hubs on a rock trail or a trail that requires stopping in the middle of an obstacle then they just make you upset. If you stop forward motion (under load) when in the middle of the obstacle and have to back up, the hub unlocks and then you have just lost 4wd...

I would try to source a set of stock locking hubs. You will be happier in the long run.

Thanks Bill - I will do that. Just to be clear, I should get stock manual locking hubs (or perhaps a set of Warn hubs) correct? I wonder if the whole axle was swapped out or just the hubs? Should I try getting the phillips head screws undone and drill out the bad ones? That is what I am thinking I will have to do.

The Track/Kick those auto hubs came off of had independant front suspension, so that is probably the stock axle. Drilling is a last resort, so do what you can to try and back out the screws. Be carefull if you drill into the front spindle, you don't want to mess up the threads.

Well exactly 1 on each side were good enought to get out with a screwdriver. I used a small bit (just larger than the diameter of the shaft of the bolt) and drilled off the 3 heads on each side and everything is nicely apart now. Spindles look good. Time to find some stock manual hubs.

What about the end play in the axle? Is it normal that I can move it in/out a bit?

Movement is not a problem. When you install the locking hubs, you will pull the stub shaft out enough to slide a C clip over the end. You can use a hub bolt in the end of the stub shaft to get a grip when you pull the stub out to add the C clip.

One last quick question on this topic: Are the actual hubs and wheel bearings the same between the Samurai and Tracker/Sidekick? In other words can I just get the manual locking hubs, locknuts and keepers and bolt it on to the hubs I have, or does everything on the spindle need to be swapped out?

Currently I put everything back together with the hubs I have, and I am looking for the parts I need to change it over. I am not in a huge hurry but this sounds like the right change to make longer term.

They should just bolt in place. Remember to use the Suzuki conical washers. The holes in the hub a drilled to accept them and they make a huge difference when trying to keep everthing together.
