I have a few questions regarding the hoses behind dash and the heater in my samurai.. I hear that heat only comes out of the bottom 2 vents under radio/ close to the floor? If so what are the round vents for on the dash? I know I don't have air conditioning but was possible an available option from factory? I need some help here guys I can't try either yet because my dash is out and the Sammy is not running yet but I want to make sure that I have a heater when I do fire her up. I drilled a hole and vacumed a bunch of leaves and junk already from the heater unit. Is there anything else I should do to ensure good heater function? Can I use black ducting tape to make a better seal where the hoses connect? Any opinions or tips are greatly appreciated thanks.

I have the same year Sami as you and I can adjust the heat wherever I need it. I don't have an air-conditioner, but the heater works fine. See if you can find a roll of Gorilla tape. That stuff will work just fine to keep the hose on the air-ducts. Good luck.

On my samurai, the heat will come out the floor vents or it will come out the defroster vents by the windows (slots at the top of the dash and on the sides corners of the dash) The round vents only blow cold air and will not route it over the heater core. The defroster vents are supplied hot air by two ducts that run up either side of the bottom heat exchanger. You can take those two lines and plumb them to the round vents so that the round vents operate with the defroster vents, but it won't blow very hard since it's dispersing the air through so many openings.

Baratacus your input is always helpful thank you..that is the way that i thought just like you said but i wasnt 100 percent sure. You also said that the round vents blow "cold air" as in just outside temp air? I dont think i would ever use it as a "fan" blowing outside air in i would rather just open the windows, wouldnt you?...since i rather use a heater on cold night expeditions that would be cool if i could route the heat exchanger hoses to connect to the round air vents but i understand that there wouldnt be much force of hot air blowing through the vents.. baratacus i have another question that you may or may not be able to answer..behind the glove box on my samurai 1988 there is no big black box..on my parts samurai that is completely stripped with no dash 1988.5-86 there is a big black box that i have no idea what it is? it is connected to some other black long box that is up above and is routed to the vents behind the hood/slotted..what is it? it had clips around the middle and im guessing there is some kind of filter inside? did this samurai possible have factory air conditioning?
