1) Why did you change the fuel pump?
2) What brand is the "universal" pump? Use only an OEM or Denso pump (not very expensive).
3) Check for fuel pressure with a gauge at the high pressure feed line at the engine. You should hear the pump "prime" for a couple seconds every time you turn the ignition key to "ON"; the pressure should hold even with the key off. Engine off, the pressure should be ~40psi, and ~30psi at idle.

4) If you have no pressure, check for good 12V and ground at the pump when the system is activated (loaded circuit).
