Hey guys i am new to the zuk world. I found a 88 samurai with the soft top. Its got some rust but nothing too bad. The guy told mw i could have it for 300 bucks. The problems with it are it need a new alternator, it has a small oil leak and the front end shakes at higher speeds. I am looking to make it an off road rig and i plan on lifting it and doing other mods. What should i look out for and where should i start with mods? Thanks.

First of all, welcome to the family.

- The alternator is an easy one as long as the problem is really the alt and not a wiring issue.

- An oil leak can be an easy fix depending on where it is coming from.

- A front end shimmy-shake is also an easy fix if you attack the problem(probably a bad tire/tire balance issue) and don't try to bandaid it with a bigger steering damper.

You need to decide what you want to do with the rig before considering what upgrades to plan. Rocks, mud, sand, all around trails... time to plan.

One thing that you, and any other new Zook owner needs to understand, is that you just paid a mere $300 for a car. That pays for a title and something that may start. Like any other vehicle purchased to only $300, plan to replace everything. And if you get lucky and some of the parts work fine then consider it a bonus.

The first Sammy I bought cost me $6K used. The bonus was that it was only a little over a year old and everything worked like new. The next only cost me $1K but it was 18 years old... Things started great but I eventually replaced almost all of its moving parts.

A Zook is like any other car. You get out of it just what you put into it. And given the right build, it will do whatever you ask of it. The fun part is the number of smiles and looks of astonishment you will get as you do it.

Welcome. Whether you know it or not, you made a great decision.

and any running sammie is worth 300 even if u were just going to part it out...if i was you i would grab it immediatly, one thing u will find is parts for sammies are considerably less expensive than parts for other vehicles

I am going to try to get a hold of the guy tonight and offer him 260.00 and see if he takes it. if i get it i want to do a spoa lift, 31" tires rhino line the inside and maybe outside a full cage and some gears, One question has anyone put a turbo on a carbed 1.3 yet?

i havent seen it done yet but was kinda interested in it... although for the money it would take to turbo it out i would just do the 4.3 vortec v6 kit in it and get a fuel injected model and have twice the power as a turboed 1.3

I have seen it done. It helps a little on the top end, but it doesn't give it any more grunt (torque) down low where you need it. Besides, unless you rebuild with better than stock engine innards, you will likely lose the motor in an ugly way...

I want to keep it carbed what are my options fo engine swaps with a carb?
Not many easy ones...

You can swap to a 1.6 8v and keep the 1.3 intake manifold. Port and polish would help a little, but you will want to go to a larger carb and install an electric fuel pump.

or

Go to the 1.6 8v like above but go with the larger 44mm Screamin Eagle Harley carb with intake (kit).

Well i went last night and offered the guy 260.00 for it and he said o.k.. SWEET!!! So tonight after work i am goin gto pick her up. Since i need a new alternator should i just go with the upgraded one? And i will post pics tonight. Also how hard is it to change the oil pan gasket.

Do you really need the upgrade? If you are planning on installing alot of lights or a winch (or both) then it is a good idea. A new alt is not cheap, so it is better to do it now when you know you have to spend the money. One thing though... make sure it is the alt, and not just a dead battery not taking a charge, or the fusable link (white wire at positive terminal) burnt out.

Oil pan gasket is not hard to change after you lift it, but if it is stock height it will be a little more cramped between the engine and the axle.

Oh, congrats on getting the Zook!

Nice score.
Glad you are looking at doing a real lift... please do everyone a favor when you remove those rear 'shackles'. For everyones safety, throw them away. Far, far away...

it should make an extremely nice trail rig...if you rebuild the engine make sure to put new exhaust valves in it...they were notorious for breaking and seizing and just being to soft

Well i got it home tonight it needs new tires bad they are dry rotted and the driver rear tire came apart while towing it home:eek:. I then tore the seats out and carpet. I tried to start it but the battery is shot so i have to get a new one. On the passenger front seat rear bracket that holds it to the floor ripped right off floor and all!! I plan to pressure wash it good clean it out and then get welding, and make my rock sliders.
