I took the head off my recently re-acquired 2010 GV (J24B) after it had head gasket “issues”. My Father-in-law paid a small fortune for a replacement engine and I’m thinking he may have gotten slightly ripped off as that one lasted all of a couple weeks. After taking the head off, I noticed a large “channel” filed between middle chambers. Is there any logical reason someone would do this?

That head gaskets been blown a long time to cause that erosion, doesn't look like file marks.
That engines had some serious issues, did he nit get a compression and leak down test before he bought it?
Have a look at the cratering in the left hand head pocket around the spark plug and between the valves too.

Have a look at the cratering in the left hand head pocket around the spark plug and between the valves too.
He bought the engine online interstate. He arranged for his mechanic to do the head gasket, etc before it went in, but he didn’t get it in writing. The mech he spoke to left but forgot to pass on the message. My FIL assumed it was all done, until it failed big time. Mechanics refused to rectify cos it wasn’t in writing.

The valve seat below one intake valve (left valve on right at 6 o'clock) and one exhaust valve (right valve on left at 9 o'clock) show recession also so the cylinder head looks ready to be scrapped. Your father-in-law should have some words to the people who sold him such a junk engine.

That head looks to me like it's been removed from the block & exposed to the elements for quite some time - if it was in that condition when the replacement engine was installed, it would/should have been noticeable immediately upon start up ...

Don't you have consumer protection laws in NZ? You surely should have a comeback against the seller of the engine, rather than the installers? Doesn't look as if that engine has run for a LOOOOOOONG time?
If money is the issue, (& who isn't it for) then I'd pull the valves & have a good look at the seats to see if there are any cracks which WOULD scrap the head. If not then I'd check how much warpage there was - there probably is some if the gasket had been blown for so long. Again if not too bad to be skimmable, I'd take a deep breath & get that groove filled with TIG welding, then get the whole head skimmed just enough to get flat. While in the machine shop get them to recut the valve seats, cross your fingers & refit the head - shouldn't cost too much if you have already laid out a pile for the engine. - What's the rest of the engine like BTW - bores in particular given the rust in the head, , bearings & seals? Good luck...

That flag is an Aussie flag. And you also know this by 'online interstate '. We don't have interstate in NZ. The condition of that head says it has not worked in a very long time. Nor was it a running engine. The words 'ripped off' come to mind. If you are certain that you have no come back from the seller (unless Aussie consumer laws can help) then your best bet is as pycoed suggests.
The head looks like it was part of an engine that has been lying around somewhere for a long time and the seller either knowingly, or never bothered to check and just made an assumption, sold you a bad engine. I would be looking carefully at the description he ordered the engine from. The Aussies generally are not too happy with people who knowingly rip other people off.

Just a thought. There has been extensive and repeated flooding along the eastern part of Australia over the last few years with thousands of cars submerged and written off. I wonder if the engine came from one of these cars judging from some of the brown discolouration.

Oops sorry - the flags are very similar especially at the size shown in the sidebar. I did have a thought about "states" too & took a guess. Mea culpa - I know it rankles - I've been decribed as English a feew times online:eek:

Apparently he bought the engine from a wrecker in South Australia as a “low km, running” engine and had it shipped to WA. I think he said he paid $4500. Not sure if he just couldn’t be bothered getting it sorted, or was under pressure from his missus to just get rid of it. Could probably try and research where it originated from based on engine number, but I’m a shift worker and haven’t got time for that! Watching salvage auctions for parts car, possibly a V6 swap.

I'm in Adelaide so if you can pass on to me details of the seller I might be able to drop in to him to show him your photo from a "low km, running engine" and discuss this description!

Somebody somewhere has either done the dirty or shipped the wrong item by accident. That head no way came from a "low km' running" engine. That is either a very expensive mistake or somebody had the best week ever. If any explanation turns up please post it here.

A bit tricky. No written claims made about the engine. Nor is there any mention about how many kilometers the vehicle had done. Nor where the engine came from (Japan or Aus although they are a Jap importer). Nor any mention of any warranty given with the engine. I guess there was lots of stuff said verbally but with no record of this then it makes it a bit tricky. Best of luck with resolving this in any useful way.

Just had a look at the seller's website and this is their statement from the site: " Dismantling all Suzuki models we can save you hundreds on the cost of repairs with low km parts with up to 2 years warranty". .They also make a point of selling "quality second hand parts". Obviously they avoid stating that they can cause you to lose thousands of dollars by selling crap parts. I have sent them an email with a link to this discussion to see what they have to say for themselves.

Wraith73 - I have been in contact via email with Rob Russo at Exclusive Jap Parts and Imports who is asking for more details. On reading your initial forum entries it appears some clarification is needed. You say the engine lasted a couple of weeks so it was initially running and also there was some confusion with a mechanic going to replace the head gasket before the engine was installed. So there must have been a compression problem picked up then. He would have obviously noticed the poor state of the head if he had attempted this. The cylinder head in your photo would have given so little compression the engine would have been very hard to start at all. Also your invoice indicates the engine is from a 2013 GV and it is hard to imagine how such a relatively new cylinder head still attached to the engine finished in such a weathered state. Did the engine actually run and is the cylinder head in your photo the actual one ftom the engine bought from Exclusive Jap Parts and Imports?
