My 1988 Sami has been in constant rebuild since the purchase. I removed the 1.3 and made alot of notes during disassemble. Now that I am putting it back together I have run into a problem that I saw before, but thought it was a simple fix when I put it back together. At first I thought it was the distributor cap turned 180*.....no prob i'll just turn it later. This was not the case. The wires have not been removed from the dist. The wires are all marked to which cylinder they were removed. The rotor was pointing to the #1 cylinder marked on rotor cap, with the marks aligned on the pulley's when I disassembled the motor. I have installed the timeing belt with the pulley marks aligned to the marks. I installed the distributor with the rotor pointing to the #1 cylinder. I said all that to say this.....the rotor cap will only fit on one way.

If the rotor was turned 90* the wires would be correct.....can't do this.
The engine ran fine (except for the massive oil leak around the rear main) before it was taken apart.

As far as I can tell...when the marks on the pulleys are aligned properly Cyliners 1 and 4 are on compression strokes? Engine is not installed the vehicle yet....still on engine stand. Need some direction on what my choices are....hopefully it's just a wire sawp. I just wonder how it got this way in the first place.

if 1 and 4 are at the top of the "up" stroke with your pulley lined up with the marks and at TDC then your crank is in the correct position. Depending on which valve is open one is on the compression stroke the other on the exhaust stroke. If the cam is off then so will be your dizzy. If the marks are lined up on the cam gear then the cam shouldn't be off though.

Line your rotor up on the number 1 cylinder wire

On the 1.3 samurai engine when the timing marks are lined up on the engine. Both marks pointing up. You shound be pointing at the #4 cyl. on the distributor. The marks line up the cam for #4 not #1. So after install it would look to be 180 degrees off.

the fact that he's only off by 1 cyl instead of 2 would indicate that it's more than just the dizzy being out 180 deg. set your cam markings and then put the plug wires on the dizzy with the assumption that the rotor is pointing at the number 4 and see how it goes.

when the crank is at TDC, the pistons will be in the same position, no mater which revolution it is. whether or not its the exhaust stroke or the compression stroke is determined by the cam position. If the cam marks are set on the line then number 4 cylinder is going to be at the top of its compression stroke, (both exhaust and intake valves closed) while #1 cylinder is going to at the top of it's exhuast stroke (intake valve closed, exhaust valve open) Your dizzy can go in at 0 or 180, so if your dizzy is in bacwards then you can be off 180 but you can just rearange your wires so it's firing at the right position.

After 4 months finally got engine together and installed today.
