So awhile back, my engine light came on and I took it to a mechanic. They ultimately gave it back without any charge because they couldn't find out what was wrong with the car. He said there was probably something wrong with the car's internal computer and I would need to take to Suzuki to get it fixed.

But there isn't a Suzuki location close by (40 minutes, I went there before and it was NOT a pleasant experience), so I've just ignored it until I needed to get new tags. The problem is it wants an emissions test, and my light goes on and off whenever it feels like it. A new Suzuki place opened not too far away, but I'm a little concerned about the cost. This isn't THAT good of a car and I've never had to spend money on a cars 'computer' (I didn't even really know they had them).

So does anyone have any idea how much of a hassle this is going to be?

No - none of us does - and the reason none of us does, is that you haven't taken the time to give us any idea of what Suzuki you have.

In a nutshell, when the computer senses a problem, it sets a failure code and turns the light on to get your attention, you have to get the code read to know what the computer thinks is wrong.

On the early Suzukis you could read the codes with nothing more than a paperclip, and some of those turn the check engine light on based entirely on the odometer mileage (to remind you to have the emission system checked) and turning the light off is as simple as flipping a switch.

I see you mention the light going "on and off whenever it feels like" so it would sound like the "nag switch" is not the cause in your case, which doesn't mean it's not something simple, a loose gas cap can turn that light on, and so can an O2 sensor nearing the end of it's useful life - but you will never know, until you get the codes read.

Now - how about you fill in the missing details about the vehicle and we'll see if we can help you pin the problem down.
