Hi all, new to Suzuki ownership and am having an issue with the engine light coming on.

We've recently moved to Australia and have purchased a one owner, 125km, sx4 sedan 2.0 auto from a family friend. It's a lovely car but recently the engine light came on. The car went to a mechanic and they changed a sensor (not sure which one of the 2 but can find out) and that cleared the problem for a couple of days.

The light came back on so it went to an auto electrician and they suggested changing the spark plugs, which also cleared the problem, for a couple of days.

I've done a bit of reading through the forum and read about getting oil on one of the sensors (but that's more likely on a 2007 model, right? but ours may be a MY2007 sold in 2008?). Prior to us buying the car it did have a service, the same time as one of the sensors being replaced. Could it be that the sensor was changed prior to the service and the new sensor may be contaminated?

I've also had a thought that using 91 RON fuel may be an issue. I'm from the UK and only used to seeing 95 and 98 RON. Here in Oz we have 91, 95 and 98. Will try a couple of 98 tanks but that obviously won't clear the error

Any other ideas?

Also noted that cruise control has stopped working, but that seems normal if the engine light is on.

That is consistent with the wrong parts being changed (guessing), they cleared the codes (light out) you drive and the ECU sees a fault (light on)..

You need to get the ECU scanned and post the codes, further investigation required..

Yes, clearing the codes, which shuts off the light and clears the computer's memory, is what the repair shop would have done at the end of their work. It takes several drive cycles (heat up, cool down, speed changes, etc) for the car's computer to verify all systems are up and running correctly. Many of the faults it finds are not displayed until the drive cycle tests are fully completed, possibly taking several days to display.

My description is somewhat simplified but as Aquanaut20 said, the repair shop likely did not replace the truly faulty part. Posting the actual fault codes to the forum is the best way for online folks to help diagnose the problem. Otherwise the guesses we make won't be any different than the guesses your repair shop made and we'll be suggesting you replace parts which aren't the real issue.

Thanks for your help guys. I ordered an ODB2 adapter from ebay and it arrived today ($5 AUD from China!).

Plugged in and downloaded an app (Torque (Lite)). Loads of data to play with!

The most important one was the error code - P0420. It allowed me to clear the light but as you say above it will come back after a few cycles. So, what would you suggest now I have the code?

This is a code that most mechanics spend too much time guessing at and not enough time at proper diagnosis..

As you now have a LIVE DATA SCANNER, lets start diagnostics..

I would like to see the following, in graph form, @ Idle, 2000rpm.. It is best to not have too many PIDs running at the same time.. the ECU MUST be in closed loop and engine full hot..

B1S1 O2, (pre CAT)
B1S2 O2, (Post CAT)
STFT (short term fuel trim)
LTFT, (long term fuel trim),and
engine coolant temp

Thanks, I can't see all of those fields on the app I'm using. Which one would you recommend for android.?
