hello there,

I convinced my sister to buy a 1999 wagon r a couple of months ago.

She got it for £950 I believe, it took her a while to get used to the looks (Ive always loved qwerky looking things) but weve all been really happy at how practical it is - being tiny one the outside but like a van on the inside.

A reall cool car and much better quality than the two citroens we have had previously in the family.

The thing is a couple of weeks ago the car began to have problems starting.

The battery would seem to go dead at simply leaving the hot fan on when parking. And the car got stuck a few times and had to be jump started several times.

The vehicle recovery guy said it was prbably the battery that was knackered.

She had the car taken to a japanese car garage who have had the car for several days where they have had problem diagnosing the problem.

Theny intially thought it was the battery/spark plugs tooo. But when that didnt work they thoguht it was some sort of electronic distribution part. Which they said would cost £500

To be certain hoever they had it sent somewhere for computer diagnostics.

This took a few days, and even they came out with flaky results.

They claimed - it "seemed" the whole engine computer was knackered - by process of elimination.

Apparently costing £2000 for a new one & £500 for reclaimed one to put in.

They are still not 100% certain, and we are in a uncomfortable position not knowing whats actually wrong and would be unhappy to pay such large amounts on a £950 car even if it was 100% definite.

I am basically after some advice on if problems such as this are commonly reported for the wagon r ?

And information on Car Computer repair in general, any good specialists in BIRMINGHAM and the costs involved.

We basically do not know what to do now,

my sister really needs the car to be working ASAP , but she doesnt have the money to waste on such outrageously expensive "guesswork repairs"

Any advice?

I know of a few people who have used The ECU Doctor. I think they are in Plymouth so you'd have to post it. You should be able to find them on Google.

Computer diagnostics equipment is actually designed to pinpoint problems with your car, making your car repair cost more effective by diagnosing most common problems easily. A computer is only as good as the technician using it. Have you tried the electrical diagnostic? Get your automobile's electrical system checked by a professional technician too.
